Rewatching Season 2. Seeing Omar testify against Bird...thinking about how the writers made Omar a homo and a snitch, 2 things that are not respected in the streets. Also through different convos, I hear a lot of non-street folks and non-blacks cite Omar as a favorite character.

It’s as if people find it to be an entertaining narrative of “hey y’all. look at these so called tough guys getting punked by a gay snitch.” Maybe I’m thinking too deep but in hindsight it feels like an attack on Black masculinity :patrice:

you're choosing to miss a lot if you write off people naming omar as their fave as just being entertained by a gay tough guy. omar was by far one of the most layered characters on TV + michael k williams killed the role

Omar had gained the attention and respect of viewers before it was even known that he was gay.

In fact, his sexuality doesn't even come to mind when he's onscreen, except when he's sharing a scene with his partner...and that's not even a big deal.

Kima and Herc were the two most useless cops on that show. I didnt hate Kima like I hated Herc but I seen no use for her. Lester, McNulty, Bonk, even Prez and Carver all made strides in development and became better cops/individuals as the show went on but Herc and Kima went the other way. They never showed any growth. Herc showed growth but it was not as a cop. Kima was just there In The show. Besides being shot undercovered, her character really didn’t serve any purpose in the show. Like if she disappeared after season one would it really have effected the show. She didn’t do nothing else significant after being shot by Little man besides snitch on McNulty.

To be fair Kima did solve the murder that basically got Carcetti elected as mayor and then they found out it wasn't what they thought it was. :mjlol:

I like the way Williams brought life to the character, but the first sentence isn't accurate.

We first see Omar and crew just briefly, casing and then sticking up the stash-house in the low rises. Maybe 4 minutes of screen time.

The very next time those characters are shown, we see Omar hugged up with Brandon on a stoop. They gave the Barksdale drugs to some crew to sell off for them. We see that Omar and Brandon are gay, and the 3rd stickup man is not.

People gravitated towards the character later as he was developed, but he was shown to be gay almost right away.

The Omar stuff is funny..got set up to go to jail..just happens to be approached by Butchie's connects when it was time to get his ass kicked...lol. And there is much more with him when you break it all down but funny.

They released a top 23 characters with the best story arcs of the series..he came in like #4 I think...Daniels was #3 and Bubbles was #1. They had Namond real high..odd.

not that i didn't notice this, but one of the biggest fails of the wire/not going another season was leaving us hanging on mike. they were building up who i'd consider to be the second most interesting character in the series, then it was just over
they didnt leave us hanging on Mike. They showed us his future. The finale showed how the themes of each season (politics, education, poverty, drugs, media, etc ) effected society and was a never ending cycle. Mike becomes Omar...Dookie becomes Bubbles...Chris becomes Weebay...Carcetti becomes Royce...etc. Maybe not exactly...but they will meet a similar fate or travel familiar roads

That's not how it happened at all... He was getting arrested and McNaulty let him use the phone to call Butchie. He told him where he was getting sent and Buchie's goon's stole on police in the same district. They get locked up and meet up with omar and tell him that info. They tape him up with phone books and give him a shank..

The next day at chow is when the dudes rush him. He was already good and with the goons by then.

But this type of shyt is why people loved Omar. A lot of people are speaking the truth, just different angles of it. He was first seen as gay and fans wasn't fukking with him. He wasn't even that big of a character like he was getting seen like that. Next thing you know he's gone from the gay dude who hit the stash, to this hood legend that runs nikkas off the block by the sound of his name. THAT is when nikkas was like :ehh:

Then he started going head up with whole crews, going on sprees with the two broads, robbing whole shipments and selling them back, disappearing to some island, robbing marlow, jumping off roofs..... He became a superhero. People stopped caring about the gay shyt and was :blessed: whenever he came on screen. Whether shooting or talking some shyt, you know it was going to be a good scene.
