That's one thing I respect about the French brehs, they don't care who you are, you're not about to "lil bro" them and get away with it. They set a good example of self respect and standing up for themselves, even more than us over here.

Yeah french rappers don't really care about a co-sign, the US isn't their market anyway. And even though East Coast HH had a really big influence on french HH, it developed it's own identity quite quickly so they didn't feel like they were the US's "little brother". Matter of fact in the mid 90s as a teenager I remember a lot of young brehs didn't listen to US hip-hop AT ALL, and sometimes those who did (like myself) were kind of seen as being "wannabe Americans" and acting "too good for french HH" :lolbron:

Akhenaton (leader of legendary group IAM) kind of did a song on that, making fun of himself and his fascination for the US (especially the image being portrayed in movies) growing up. (It echoes an older song from Naples, which had the same message but directed to young Italians infatuated with the American Way of Life post WW2)

(Chorus says "Tu vuo' fa l'Americano", meaning "You want to act as an American" in neapolitan)

That's the thing about French hip hop, it's not in english so they're not trying to appeal to any other demographic, so they don't suck up to the US. They developed their own identity waaaay before we did. I remember when it was the norm for UK artists to rap in an American accent. Some of us used to call them "Lankees" back in the 90s lol. Iceberg Slimm was a classic example of that.

London Posse was one of the few who kept it British. Case in point:

It obviously had an east coast influence too, but at least they rapped how they actually sounded and talked about stuff that related to us.

Of course now things have changed and especially with the creation of grime and other British genres, the average youth will name their own homegrown artists in their top 10 and that's a GOOD thing. The content is always about things we experience here and not about shyt happening 6,000 miles away. It wasn't always like that in my day.

Fat Joe dissing 50 while presenting at the VMAs by saying he’s happy with all the extra security courtesy of G Unit, 50 responding by cursing out Fat Joe after his performance and Kanye standing up and watching 50’s rant with an “this is inspiring me to one day create similar fukkery at the VMAs” expression
Wish I could find the video of this, I just saw it live on TV when it happened and haven't been able to find it since

Mickey Factz being the guy to "bring New York back"

:mjlol:
Horrible era. That blog rap Nah right era could be its own thread. So many rappers that got pushed hard and went nowhere. Mickey Factz, The Knux, Asher Roth, and several other corny sounding muthafukkas

Californ-i-a by way of BK
I remember everyone was saying DMXs line in "Get At Me Dog" was about MF Grimm.

"Lucky that you breathing, but you dead from the waist-down
The fukk is on your mind? Talking that shyt that you be talking
And I bet you wish you never got hit cause you be walking"

Everyone talks about the K-Solo diss, but this never gets brought up anymore. But I remember this. They battled before and had tension.

Fat Joe talking about he did 5 joints with BIg well where they at nikka :stopitslime:
This later turned into a joint album that he references constantly on the Joprah show. Another weird thing about this is he doesn't talk about it when someone close to Big is on the show like Bus or Puff.

Could be telling the truth for all we know but it seem like ducktales. :russ:

Nas feat. Kanye, KRS, and Rakim- Better Than I've Ever Been

^^^ song was possibly recorded for Hip Hop Is Dead. It ended up on some project for Nike. We all know the Premo remix and most think the Premo remix is the original and the only version. The original joint was produced by Rick Rubin. The Rubin version is obscure and the remix rarely gets brought up despite it being the first time Nas had released a Premo joint since 2001. It is also the first official joint to feature both Nas and Rakim.

Kanye and Premo reminded me of the G.O.O.D music cypher with Premo on the decks. Kanye spitting a combination of his verses from Dark Fantasy and Eyez Closed before the songs came out.

The revised version of Christmas in Harlem with Cam/Jim/Vado.

I remember this was a surprise because of ongoing Kanye/Dipset beef at the time.
