The witnesses, some of them military personnel, do KNOW that what they're seeing isn't their equipment. Which leaves us with possibilities:

I think it's engineered in us to be either/or. Why not both? Or perhaps there's no difference?

I will say that those investigating the phenomenon are indeed saying there are elements of both.
