Is Hip-Hop's Birthday Mythology?
The story of hip-hop’s birthday on August 11, 1973 is an amazing one. But…is it true?www.okayplayer.com
But this thread reeks of jealousy and insecurity and I understand why, we all do.
He's not. They are intentionally misrepresenting what he said.
I think last year he did a quick interview where he said other groups in America can't compare their struggles to African Americans because they have a base/know exactly where they come from. He said African Americans are at a disadvantage because we don't have that base like Chinese, Italians etc.. have.
They are taking that as him saying, "Black people have no culture"
Admittedly, Burna Boy has been excessively biting AA culture of late due to the crossover hit, “Igbo & Shayo”. But he had pure Afrobeats hits (mostly influenced by Fela Kuti) before this & they were original.
I believe to him, he trying to bridge the gap by paying homage to AA legends (cos they’re also making money off him for sampling their hits) but he needs to read the room. A lot of the hardcore fans don’t like the new Burna Boy & there’s also push back from the AA community online. So, he would have to find a balance somewhere if he doesn’t want to ostracise everyone.
Also, he’s getting a lot of love offline from AA legends, especially from NYC & I guess they’re the ones telling him to embrace NYC culture. RZA was in his last video throwing up WU sign & he wore WU wear (the video was also shot in BK). RZA & GZA are on his next album. Swizz Beat is also working with him & he’s on his next album. And Diddy co-signed him a few years ago.
And he never said AAs have no culture - all he said is that AAs should embrace their roots (Africa). I don’t agree with the statement based on the current clime since a section of AAs don’t want to be associated with Africa. However, it’s an innocent statement from a guy who can’t read the room. You can say he’s ignorant but he had no malicious intent & the guy has always told whoever cares to listen that he grew up idolising DMX & Wu Tang.
Link on him saying AAs have no culture?
Oh he thinks African-American culture doesn't exist? Carry on then.
“he said we have no culture but he’s jocking our style”
what? he never said anything close to those words. words have meaning.
Also that card you posted isn't authentic. Y'all gotta try harder mane its rookie mode at this point
“his natural inclination was to be offensive”Jealousy and insecurity from whom, exactly?
No, that's my bad. I took him saying we have no cultural "base," 'bc we don't know where our grandparents are from', as us having no culture.
One could very easily argue that there's not much difference, but if you want to be pedantic, no, he did not say those exact words.
I agree with @Bonk in that, while I don't think he meant to be offensive, his natural inclination was to be offensive. That means something. If he wants to educate himself further so he can speak on these matters knowledgeably, cool, but don't come over here with no fukkshyt. We dealing with F&F already and we don't need no more black foreigners shytting on us.
“his natural inclination was to be offensive”
you’re just trying to hold onto any narrative left that an african was badmouthing when he clearly wasn’t. he never implied that ba have no culture just that there’s a lack of a concrete tracing of roots present. he’s clearly speaking from a place of sympathy. it’s you who wants to be inclined to be offended because anything an african says on here is met with vitriol because of tariq nasheed brainwashing

why leave this response out that’s pasted from that same article?
seems like back then black people from all over were in better harmony. now everyone likes to compete with each other over arbitrary things for no reason. why do black ppl hate each other so muchI think Burna Boy also needs to read the room & stop the excessive sampling & Americanisation of his music. When the whole gatekeeping of culture started, I always knew it will get to this point cos people are too emotional & SM provides a platform for all kinds of dysfunction.
What’s interesting is that: when you study black history deeply, from late 19th century to all of the 20th century - there was symbiotic influences back & forth between black diaspora & Africa. The exploits of Samori Toure & Anglo/Zulu wars influenced a lot of the AA bourgeois in Harlem & educated class from Howard. And by the early 20th century - the likes of Dubois (who was part of the group that included Caribbeans that organised the Pan-African conference to educate African students about Anti-Colonial struggle) & Garvey were instrumental in the anti-Colonial struggle in Africa. Heck, there were Africans in Harlem that were part of the Garvey movement & they wrote letters back to Africa (I have read some of them) in the early 20th century about the need to start a similar movement in Africa & that was how WASU (West African Student Union) started.
Then in the 1960s, you had the likes of Amílcar Cabral of Guinea Bissau & how his exploits in his war against the Portuguese inspired the founding members of the Black Panther Party.
Times have changed & Burna Boy needs to stop being too forward. When you start thinking you have all the answers - that’s when you’ll end up in the mess he’s in right now.
Ever notice how the loudest voices in these diaspora music wars are never the artistes themselves? They realize the importance of cross pollination in the creation of art. Case in point, Burna sampled Jeremih for this song. Jeremih’s new album has a bunch of afrobeats. In summary, it ain’t that serious
The excuses and rocks thrown at Black Americans before the thread is locked

This doesn’t correspond to the invention of rap itself or hip hop music
