Liked it. Thought it was funny. I would recommend. Can't fault the actors, direction, or story.
I just want something richer, deeper, more profound, more challenging.
- Jamie Foxx is a fool.
- Teyonnah, was aight.
- Seemed more Key and Peele, than Jordan Peele Get Out tbh. Whole thing fits in with the Sorry to Bother You but also Atlanta. Atlanta is much better written though.
- David Alan Grier and the Church scene? Oooh Lord (c) Above the Law adlib from Living like a Hustler.. The closing frame of with chick in the back of the church twerking....
- The music was great. I wonder how much that cost to have all those classics?
But Boyega was clearly in a different movie. Even though Pimp and "Sex Worker" had some interesting backstory or character work, we don't even get a taste of that until the 2nd half. Black Jedi is really good in this to me. He brings so much to it.
The message - it's almost like a kindergarten version of consciousness. I can't hate the message, but after seeing this type of Black Satire for decades, I wonder when they are gonna get deeper into it. A tad bit more subtle than anything Spike or the Wayans Brothers or Townsend would do - but it's like Hollywood is only gonna allow certain levels of Blackness and commentary. I'm not surprised there is an Easter Egg video.
They didn't do that for Banshees of Inisherin though. There's a level of cultural commentary that might not be profitable for Hollywood when it comes to Black people, but they'll spend their last dollar on 3 Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri.
I just want more for us. Something as challenging as say Moonlight, minus the baggage that Moonlight came with.
