I think its not supposed to have an exact time.

However, if I had to guess I'd think it was early 2010s or late 2000s
When they started talking about Bitcoin I hung on for a few minutes but I just couldn't get into the movie, I know what they were going for but Netflix always fumbles little things like that. I'm good

I'm usually pretty good about suspending my disbelief, but the fact they were continuously able to break into the lab so easy ruined the movie for me.

How can they afford all that tech and staff for the science shyt but not have armed security?! :what:
Ok it didn't RUIN it for me, I just thought it was a major oversight. I still think the movie is good.

Its a mix of a bunch of time periods. It's meant to be ambiguous but like someone was saying things in the hood don't really change so they just take bit and pieces from different time periods (IE Jamie Foxx's character, Fontaine's car, them talking about the Suburban/Tahoe that all the young rappers get when they get money, Blockchain and bitcoin mentions, flip phones)

Watching it a second time rn, because i fell asleep on it the first due to starting it too late a few nights back :flabbynsick: . Great blend of sci fi and social commentary. I really like this lane that black cinema seems to be finding itself in currently. Definitely worth a sticky @hex

Hmmm, I don’t know if anyone mentioned this but it’s interesting the guys in the lab coats had dark frizzy hair/fros and dark eyes. The ones who were conducting all these experiments and watching over us. Was the director trying to tell us something?

Sitting with this movie a day later, it was really good. I do hope that there is a sequel though, as I felt that the scientist's reasoning at the end for all of this was a bit shakey and not the best way to end this story imo. Fortunately it seems like they left it a bit open ended and I'd really like for the writer to go deeper down the rabbit hole with this as there's a ton of potential material to work with. Also while I was amazed at Boyega's range he displayed in this role, I do feel like some impact was taken away from it by not being helmed by an american actor. Two pretty big issues, but still not so bad that they took away from the sum of the movie too much. I really would like to see this become an anthology, as I think it could be not just some good entertainment, but also an important cultural piece for this generation.
