Yes they were original inhabitants of the south west ALONG with native tribes, and in fact got along with those tribes just fine for decades. What you think those tribes just magically appeared there? They migrated there just like many Mexican settlers that didn't even identify themselves as Mexicans at the time

I I've worked in grocery store, deli, and restaurant kitchens for about five years. There is a racial hierarchy. I battle racism everyday as a cook. I've worked in gourmet suburban spots so I'll speak on that.
This is how it works. IM are on salary and are paid hourly. They don't speak English well so positions that require good spelling and speaking they don't get. They work back of the house jobs.
its like working with the Mexican Mafia. If you're not Mexican they're going to try to make you quit or get you fired. Sometimes they get management jobs which can pay six figures at a small gourmet grocery store.
The employers hire the IM family members which is illegal in California, it's called nepotism. If you're black you wash dishes or do stock.The hours are early AM and late PM. It's hella hard dirty work with the highest turn over. It's slave labor with better wages. I've had every job in a kitchen.
When I cook it's usually alongside Mexican and Asian immigrants, there's always illegal Mexicans. White people design the food. Mexican and Asian people make it. Sometimes there's a Black person if they're excellent. I could tell you some stories that would shock you.
The Mexicans will speak only Spanish in the kitchens. If you don't know any Spanish you're fukked. They invented a language called Kitchen Spanish! Every other race in a kitchen has to learn this to work. It becomes second nature to speak Spanish. My white and Asian immigrant buddies and I speak Spanish to each other outside of work. Again, I love soccer so I always make friends with immigrants because they usually do too.
Back to those well paying jobs. Most food related or grocery jobs actually pay liveable wages if you stick it out for the long haul. The OT is there because there's always something to do. You can get benefits. Most give annual raises. Sick leave. Free and discounted food. I haven't paid full price for food in like five years. I didn't pay for food for two years and I only ate gourmet. Paid vacation. All without a high school diploma.
Some IM I've worked with own homes in two countries. Speak two languages, pay for their kids' college, and have job security. I can't say that about most Black Americans I know. When I go to the dish shack to give my brothers my dishes the pain, envy, hopelessness, and anger in their eyes makes me wash my own dishes.
The dish washers promoted to the equivalent of a server/busser worked for eight fukking years to get there. He told me he had to sell crack before he got hired to support his mom and family. He told me that job got his family out the hood.

What a lot of you fail to realize is that their racism isn't specific to just black people. They're racist towards Asians, Indians and vice versa. There were tribes throughout the Americas whose borders didn't reflect the modern ones of course, but most Mexicans are descended from Europeans and tribes who were not present in what is now the United States.
