What makes it even crazier to me is that even after 7 episodes, the show still hasn’t made a narrative clear other than the family being haunted and being fukked with every time they leave their house. With 3 episodes in and I have no idea where this is going because this show just feels like an anthology of how a black family can be fukked with.
Totally agree.

If you think you're lonely now, ohhh girl...
I agree with you on the sustained creepy vibe of the show and also agree with you even more about the way this show seems a bit too exploitative when it comes to showing black people being shyt on. It is an endless parade of black trauma porn with sprinklings of supernatural horror tossed in every once and a while.
This show could've been much better set in modern times just focused on a black family dealing with a demonic possession/haunting without all the other stuff thrown in for a reason I just can't understand at all.

See, I knew some fukk shyt was up after watching the first episode. This was marketed as some kinda black supernatural thriller, but is really just more black torture porn. I have no qualms when the plight of black people in this country is shown in detail, but the means has to justify the end. People are starting to show/exploit the black circumstance on some just because shyt, which is a shame.

The Underground Railroad by Barry Jenkins will be legit because it’s handled by someone that is genuinely trying to say something. “ Them” is some “just because we can,” shyt.

I disagree. There is a romanticism regarding 1950s America. When people say MAGA they’re really saying “take me back to the 50s”. This shows that under that cute clean cut aesthetic there were monsters running around. Yeah this is difficult to watch because this likely happened all around America. I don’t think it’s just purely exploitative torture porn. Also how do you folks watch 6+ hours of a show you supposedly don’t like? (Not talking about you but others in this thread). Maybe the point of a horror show is to be horrified.

The programming as predicted- I refuse you watch another episode of this. Been called it- another horrorsploitation movie profiting off the souls of black trauma. Read a spoiler for episode 5 - they went too far, f this. Glad I deaded watching this halfway through episode 2.
*HEAVY SPOILER
Did Them: Covenant just cross a line with *that* death scene?

Like I said in the other thread -
Idk about this. This might be a no for me.

Legacies of black people and conflicts reduced to a horror movie - I’m not letting that programming control my psyche. Not sure if y’all notice the pattern - Antebellum, American Horror Story - Coven, The Soul Collector, Lovecraft series - watching trauma shouldn’t be classified as “horror made for tv entertainment”. These were people’s lives, conflicts, and struggles; not a sound byte. It’s getting disturbing - trauma violence, dysfunction “porn” to satisfy the bloodlust of white audiences and profit for promotion. Legacies and legends disrespectfully reduced to a horror movie script for thrills and chills- Nope, it’s getting to be too much.

Yeah, I see what others are saying in this thread as I progress through these episodes. Not much substance, and trauma porn for the sake of shock value only. Shame because I was fukkin with that pilot. I’m only six episodes in and practically begging for the show to complement that beautiful cinematography. :francis:

The same people always talking the “slavery was over 400 years ago” why can’t Black people get over it; are the same segment that seem to have no problem making profits of $400 million off black trauma marketing this as a horror movie. But if this was a “Nat Turner” flip the plot and show the Episode 5 graphic scene with a white family - wouldn’t have made it past the writer’s room. Nope- I’m standing on principle with this.

The English actor and musician, who performs under the name Bashy- (husband). Deborah Ayorinde was born in London, England- (wife). The new Amazon Prime Video limited anthology series Them, executive produced by Lena Waithe.

Her film bestie Cynthia Erivo also from the UK played both the Harriet and Aretha Franklin roles in the Hulu/Nat Geo movie - flop movies and yet they keep pursuing. Jodie Turner-Smith is a British model and actress, known for her work in Queen & Slim. That’s a pattern that’s becoming very culturally concerning - movie or not. I knew something was off.

This show seems super divisive but I should probably finish the entire series before fully commenting, the pilot episode was really good to me though.

Its really sad because the cinematography is really dope ...some of these shots
like the wide pan of the school bus are beautifully dreadful and the plot itself had enough meat on the bone to really explore some interesting angles but got damn did they ever go for the lowest common denominator here with their execution... The main black characters come off as mostly incompetent incoherent and ineffective in almost every instance and even the unhinged whites seem overall dull in their malcontent ...The white woman neighbor comes off as far too unstable to serve as a believable psychologically tactical antagonist which is the lane that role would have been most effective...The lack of character depth and cunningness makes most of the brutality in the series largely as gratuitous as a cheap 80s slasher film ...but unlike a Friday the 13th entry this is framed as supposedly offering more substance than it actually does ... like I said ... what a sad blown opportunity :francis:

Do y’all always have to have temper tantrums and write think pieces like a group of Twitter bytches every time you are not into something? Just turn it off or do not watch if you are really that “traumatized and tired” as normal people do. The shyt does not require all of that. It is really intriguing because Kevin Samuels speaks about guys becoming so feminized not being because of homosexuality, as people on here love to say, but because of being raised by women and how you see that feminization online with how bytchy/temperamental/irrationally emotional guys act. All of these temper tantrums about easily avoidable shyt prove it. Stop acting like a group of bytches already
