You do know this was based on a REAL individual, right?

That's like saying the real Omar jumped out a window and survived....which is true but that's the end of that story. He didn't go around with a mop crutch waging war on local drug dealers directly afterwards.

I'd say 75% of the characters and/or events from "The Wire" were based on something real, or a composite of several real things. It doesn't change the fact that a few things weren't exactly realistic.
Hell, David Simon himself has said he wrote the show as a modern day Greek tragedy. Omar in particular fits this 100%.

Yes, the real Omar jumped out the window and survived.... and the REAL Omar is still alive. Meanwhile, the TV version was killed in the most unceremoniously way which is more realistic than any death from Breaking Bad.

:heh: at the realism angle. Realism has never been a yardstick for the quality of fiction, so toss that argument out the window.

I said, by the creator's own admission, "The Wire" wasn't meant to be strictly realistic. IE, Omar jumping out the window (which happened), then going on a killing spree like a Terminator (which obviously never happened). Omar was meant to be larger than life, "the establishment" was meant to be a stand-in for vengeful/indifferent Gods, etc.

Like I said, a Greek tragedy.

Both shows are GREAT....

But what makes the Wire great isn't that it was based on "real life"... If real life was the basis for great TV shows... why arn't we including Treme in these GOAT discussions? It's a show based around real events and people.... No one is mentioning it on these forums...it's the writing that makes both shows great the same thing goes for Game of Thrones... the writing carries the whole damn show.. Don't get me wrong the acting is good on these shows but the writing carries everything...

The one huge difference is Breaking Bad was more of a character study and Cranston REALLY gets to shine in numerous episodes where most main characters dont... At the same time we've already seen the reactions to shows with great acting that people hate the endings too (True Detective). People will shyt on it....

This is a landslide. I like Breaking Bad and think it's a really good show. But it's NOT touching THE WIRE. Glad to see most sane people believe the same.

The Wire is more important in our society and crucial concepts for criminal justice/THE TRAP. I definitely admire that series. But Breaking Bad was some next level entertainment that I was refusing to watch:wow:

Then one day I began the greatest TV Marathon with Walt. "Hmm I hope season 2 is better....Season 3 getting reckless:krs:...Season 4:whoo: season 5:whew:.

I was prepped for that final season which delivered.

Notice how nobody gives a fukk about Breaking Bad anymore. Yet the media and stanleys SWORE this was on par or better than The Wire :mjlol: Marketing is some shyt for real. Breaking Bad was straight up using The Wire's notoriety to sell its shytty show. Just like shytty 'baby goat' rappers use established goats to sell their flavor of the month music.

Breaking Bad has never been close to The Wire in quality. It was always a melodramatic "flavor of the year" type show. Now that Game Of Thrones is the new flavor of the year, Breaking Bad is forgotten.
