If you think you're lonely now, ohhh girl...
I thought it was okay.

M. Knight is a talented director. There's a scene in this movie where he builds the suspense perfectly. The crazy grandma is at the kid's door with a knife (unknown to them), and it seems like Becca is going to get outta the bed. Everyone in our theater was on the edge of their seats. He sucks as a writer, though. Really badly. I'm not big on found footage films in general, but the dialogue in this movie was my biggest gripe in terms of writing. The girl Becca spoke like no one I've ever heard speak in my entire life. Even Christopher Hitchens didn't speak like her. That's problematic for me. It's a constant reminder that you're watching a "movie," so it's impossible to suspend disbelief. The movies I enjoy the most are films where it's almost a voyeurstic feeling. Where I feel as if I'm watching something that actually happened somewhere or at some time. This movie fails mightily in that regard. I'd give this shyt about a 6/10.

I thought it was aight, and I dislike Shyamalan's post-Unbreakable movies so much I don't even talk about any of them.

The thing is, you gotta be aware going in that it's pretty much a comedy that plays with horror tropes (found footage in particular), if you try to watch it as a straight-up horror you're just fukking it up for yourself. There's also a couple of things here I enjoyed such as the small straight forward character arcs of the brother and sister coming to a head in the final act. It could've been handled a bit more subtle because it's practically telegraphing how things come full circle but since the movie was short and straight to the point as a whole I could accept it.

Regarding the twist, I saw it coming very early but I think it doesn't matter that much whether you figure it out or not because the twist isn't the revelation/climax of the story (like it was with The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable), it is instead used to add an additional dynamic (higher stakes, if you will) to the final act, and for what it's worth, the suspense is there when it matters so that's a plus.

I wouldn't consider the movie redemption for Shyamalan, but at least with this project he's embracing a different enough yet still familiar approach that could get him there some day.

Its making good money.

It's not bad. It's definitely a horror comedy but goes to some dark places, especially once the reveal comes. Which isn't a twist, but more of a reveal since you know something is off from jump. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and really liked the two kid characters and felt for them

Right on. I doubt I'd pay to see this in the theater but I will be checking it out. Shamalaman needs to stick this genre.

Once you realize the real twist is the movie itself is the movie the kids made ie isn't real, you like the movie more

I think the movie's biggest strength is that, whether you figure out the twist or not ("reveal" might actually be a better term), you know that something is off, but not what or exactly how much and that's where the suspense comes from, like the hide & seek scene underneath the farm or even something as simple as the oven (Is she gonna... or not?).

lol I'm still mad at 'Signs', 'The Village', 'Lady In The Water', and 'The Happening', but I can only blame myself. He has two great or near great movies in his first two though. From browsing the reviews, this is going to about on the level of 'Devil', which is quite a fall from grace from his prominence in the late 90's, but of course, that was 15 years ago.

Not to get into a crazy ass debate, but I agree, except I actually like Signs a lot. I know the things about it that people generally complain about, and I think there are some subtle hints in the movie that help explain them better that a lot of people miss.

I didn't like anything after that, really. I DO think The Village wouldn't have been as bad if it weren't marketed as a creature feature flick and then we got a period piece. But yeah. First 2 were classic, 3rd was dope, the rest have been almost unbearably bad.
