Per Marc stein:

Some short-but-important updates on the LA Clippers' Paul George:

🏀 One team described George to me as "the domino who will make it all go when he falls."

🏀 I am struggling to pinpoint third-party teams that put much stock in the recent leakage suggesting that the 76ers have cooled on the idea of pursuing George. Only the Sixers know their true intentions, but let's just say there will be a healthy bit of skepticism leaguewide about the Sixers bowing out completely until PG-13 has either come to terms with the Clippers or landed somewhere other than Philly.

🏀 More sources than not we've consulted believe George's preference, as a proud Southern California native, continues to be re-signing with the Clippers, but the incumbent team's apparent reluctance to extend George a longer or richer deal than Kawhi Leonard's recent three-year contract extension in the $150 million range has put George's future in legitimate flux.

🏀 Another trusted source has advised me to keep the Knicks on the list as a potential trade suitor for George if the All-NBA swingman indeed opts into the final season of his current contract at $48.8 million. That step would position George to push for a trade to another team.

More from Stein:

🏀 I'm pretty sure that the Clippers' Paul George is going to dominate conversation all week no matter what happens in the draft. There is a growing feeling leaguewide that the 34-year-old picking up his $48.8 million player option for next season to force the Clippers to trade him is an increasingly realistic scenario after months of fruitless contract extension negotiations between the parties. The Clippers appear unwilling to offer a richer deal to George than Kawhi Leonard received in January ($150 million-ish over three seasons) and that has encouraged teams out there to make trade pitches for the All-NBA swingman. Free agency officially begins Sunday at 6 PM ET; we very well could see this PG-13 movie play out by then.

🏀 I'm pretty sure that the Warriors are as interested in George as the Knicks — maybe more. Can Golden State assemble the likely multi-team trade that would be needed to win the PG-13 Sweepstakes? Stay tuned. The Warriors, as usual, are aggressively exploring trade options … with the Chris Paul contract situation we've been writing about for a month at the center of those efforts.

If all these teams weren't interested in PG he would've signed the same deal as Kawhi did for 3 years/$150 million. He wants that 4th year badly. We'll see. I'll accept whatever happens :ehh:

More from Stein:

Among the key elements regarding Paul George's future with the Clippers or elsewhere: League sources say that the 34-year-old continues to seek a new four-year contract.

Returning to the Clippers has long been regarded as George's preferred scenario, but L.A. is believed to this point to be offering a shorter deal along the lines of what it struck with Kawhi Leonard. In January, without warning, it was announced that Leonard had signed a three-year extension with the Clippers in the $150 million range.

An oft-tweeted screengrab of Paul George seated beside Philadelphia's Joel Embiid on ESPN/ABC's NBA Countdown set during the NBA Finals.
Can George nudge the Clippers into giving him a four-year deal — longer than Leonard's — by seriously entertaining his departure? That's the ongoing dance this week.

Trades involving George are generally complicated … even if he does decide before week's end (as PG-13 is said to be contemplating) to pick up his $48.8 million player option for next season.

South Central Los Angeles So Wut U Wanna Do??
It’s literally a coin flip if this team as currently constructed can win…it’s all dependent on health…without PG I feel as if the clippers are feeling the same way…they can lose with or without him and they can win with or without him especially if they make a trade for a decent replacement…Harden isn’t going to do anything until PG decides what he’s gonna do…I think the front office is playing it right because they know that going all in in either direction still probably doesn’t win a championship because of Khawhis health :yeshrug:

All three at 100% still might not be enough. The three max guys doesn't seem to be the wave anymore. If PG wants more money than Kawhi or more years let him go and get it. :manny:

I heard that PG's mom is in a wheelchair and living nearby his parents is very important to him and influencing his decision. Clippers don't believe he wants to leave LA. I wonder if a 3 year max similar to Kawhi's but with a player option in year 3 and no-trade clause would trump a 4 year max from another team?
