Thinking about how compressors shape the envelope of a sound and don't just control peaks really helped me gain a deeper understanding on how to use them better.... You realise how powerful something like parallel compression can be cause not only can you alter the impact and loudness of a sound but it also changes the tone.... You can use compressors like an eq.

Yep and multiband compression makes it even better

Word...i've been studying up on mixing and compressing and i was compressing the bass.. once i was done it sounded different than the original recording dare i say better......it definitely changed the tone and the groove slightly:ohhh:

No doubt, try this on electric bass or an 808...

Set the attack slow 30 - 60ms

And the release to as fast as it can go without distorting.

Then lower the threshold until it cuts into the sustain of a sound and compensate for gain.

...what that does is it makes the transient pop out more. So you enhance the percussive element of the bass. You can also do the opposite and add sustain to a bass i.e. fast attack, fast release...makes the sound thicker... but fukking with release really adds groove and you can get the bass to create a push - pull motion.

And doing either changes the tonal quality of a sound.

Imma try to make one next week :unimpressed:

I think a critical part of depth is narrowing the stereo field for shyt we want to push back in the mix...

Here's why...interaural time and level differences help place things along our horizontal plane..

But our perception of where a sound is coming from is hightened when the source is placed directly in front of us = low differences between both ears e.g mono..

Add in dampening of the high frequencies with a shelf then using compression to kill transients and you will really start to hear the sound move back..

Try this on a pad or piano...

Compressor quick attack quick release...threshold just low enough to catch transients.

High shelf filter to taste.

Reverb long decay..Low ER..

Another part of depth is relativity...so you gotta use shyt like this to varying degrees to create more seperation between sources. An example of this is predelay on a reverb bringing a vocal forward..

This is something I need more of in my mixes....

I have to stop putting my ideas out there. of course you sound crazy saying someone like Kayne stole an idea from you...but being that you post it on a front facing platform you can never be sure. its torture in a way

Had been struggling with enthusiasm making beats over the past 18 months or so, it's been feeling like a massive chore. But I've been messing about with the Koala app over the weekend at a whim - it's actually dope and fun. Might actually spark something :heh:

I feel negative a lot about peoples content..."lofi" and just a whole bunch of appropriated bullshyt. people that really need to be doing something else completely besides music

but I never get on no dikkhead shyt in anybodys comments. mfs really need to learn tact and self control. especially if your shyt is trash anyway
