People do realize there was mixing going on in Africa before the Americas right?
That's why networking and being social is hugeYup.
Again, I think folks would be surprised how many of their favorite artists/producers are on because of the connections their family has who are in the music industry or run in the same circles - like someone's auntie is Mike Will's doctor (completely chose Mike Will by random here).
A lot of these folks is somebody's niece, cousin, nephew, etc. Being around the music industry for some time showed me this. I was actually pretty blown away the more I found out about connections and who kind of knows who from way back or who's who's cousin/nephew from a whole other field of entertainment. Like "Hey, check out my niece's voice and my nephew's beats while I direct this high-priced fashion show for the industry".
I also know about the doctor thing (it's not Mike Will's), because one of my best friends is a doctor (10+ year grind in medical school) and sees it happen. In fact, he's treated some well-known people himself and gets invited to some of these industry events. Dude's wedding had a couple well-respected people in the industry attending. Now the guy's kids have direct-line access/resources to folks that deal with the Prime Minister of Ghana (not Ghana, but other countries). So if that kid ever wants to get into world politics, there it is - something else everybody else will have to grind for.
We like to think you can come up from the bottom, and some do, but the odds and numbers don't really reflect that story. Where you start or what you're born into has a high impact and influence on the outcome because it can make your path significantly easier, including fields that seem entirely merit-based.
You can even see this for yourself in modern day online grinds:
Folks are in Discord/Twitch communities for producers and artists trying to get recognition - in some cases the people really standing out are gifting thousands of monthly subs to people that are like $5-$10 a pop during livestreams. They then get shoutouts on streams for doing that, and while that's cool of them to do, it's building their reputation and makes it easier to show their music or their artwork. Now what person you know who's underprivileged and grinding can afford to stand out like that and drop $5-$10k a month?
A pretty well-known producer a few months ago was on twitter saying if you throw him money he'll collab with you and get your beats to an artist directly. Some white kid did like 10 beats with him. Not gonna knock the hustle, but those with more money are highly at an advantage here and he definitely wasn't the only big name producer doing that.
What?
The Roman Empire, the last great empire, had all types of people in Africa... It's been going on for a while.
