Did you forget about taxes, retirement, savings, other debt…your take home ain’t $15k

You guys lack basic reading comprehension, maybe you're skimming?

Said, even if you allocate 10k for spending and 5k for savings.

10k is enough to live in any city.

Taxes, retirement on 300k should leave you a take home of around 180k.

180/12 = 15k. Your take home is 15k. Allocate however you want.

Missed where you said that was take home. But in Cali, youre not taking home 180 on a 200k salary, that’s 90%. With absolutely no pre tax deductions, you might max out at 11.5k take home, with a 10k mortgage you got 1.5k to cover everything from health premiums, to grocery, to car note, utilities, food, etc.

200k is a great single person salary out here or couple with no kids who don’t want to own, but the second you talk about owning a home in the bay, buying at today’s prices, you’re looking at needing a 300k+ household

We were not talking about 200k, we were were talking about 300k.

And yea, 300k after taxes, retirement, etc. is around 180 take home.

Also, shouldn't be in a 10k/mo mortgage on 300k (unless you know that promo is coming).

Maybe you should re-read before commenting next time.

Nob Hill is almost to $1.5M at median now...

You are right and I keep telling folks to hit up Contra Costa etc.

:hhh:

The address on my license says Mountain View, but couldn't imagine ever buying there.

Palo Alto...right next to Stanford? Maybe, but a stretch.

San Fran, maybe.

Most likely a spot in Berkeley, near the university.

Other than that, I would rather buy in a place like Durham or buy some land in the Berkshires and build on it.

Or move to Switzerland or Paris.

Or just settle in Santa Monica or Irvine.

Numbers are dumb because they don’t take into account metro differences. Everyone doesn’t live in the same place within a state. There’s a big difference between living in Chicago and some random town in Illinois.
I think that’s why the ranges are so great. 60k-180k, etc to be considered middle class. In some areas 60-70k is middle class and in other areas you need over 100k to live a comfortable middle class life.
