Because a lot of people will then have to face the fact that they aren’t really middle class, but they’re poor. We certainly can’t have that now.

I feel like these threads are always me and you explaining basic math to people who have never seen six figure incomes and just project their current lifestyle with a greater salary.
I’m not going to lie, every time I see you post I just think this guy is slightly stupid.Yep. You guys have it figured out.![]()
Missed where you said that was take home. But in Cali, youre not taking home 180 on a 200k salary, that’s 90%. With absolutely no pre tax deductions, you might max out at 11.5k take home, with a 10k mortgage you got 1.5k to cover everything from health premiums, to grocery, to car note, utilities, food, etc.You guys lack basic reading comprehension, maybe you're skimming?
Said, even if you allocate 10k for spending and 5k for savings.
10k is enough to live in any city.
Taxes, retirement on 300k should leave you a take home of around 180k.
180/12 = 15k. Your take home is 15k. Allocate however you want.

200k is a great single person salary out here or couple with no kids who don’t want to own, but the second you talk about owning a home in the bay, buying at today’s prices, you’re looking at needing a 300k+ household

Nob Hill is almost to $1.5M at median now...
You are right and I keep telling folks to hit up Contra Costa etc.
I think that’s why the ranges are so great. 60k-180k, etc to be considered middle class. In some areas 60-70k is middle class and in other areas you need over 100k to live a comfortable middle class life.Numbers are dumb because they don’t take into account metro differences. Everyone doesn’t live in the same place within a state. There’s a big difference between living in Chicago and some random town in Illinois.
