That’s always been my disposition. Black first, gay 17th out of all things I identify with first. When I get pulled over by race soldiers, they see my blackness...not my orientation. Here is some quick history--the Root was never Black owned but it once wasn't as bad. When it started it was in the Slate group (just like Slate.com) owned by the Washington Post and then Graham Holdings which owned the Washington Post. The Root got sold to Univision in 2015.
I know some people who used to work at the Root. This current crop of garbage writers has little to do with what the founders, Skip Gates and Donna Byrd, set up when they launched the Root. They both departed (can't say if they were pushed) soon after the acquisition and are no longer involved. It's a sad fall from grace but not really different than what we saw with BET. Though it was going downhill before Viacom grabbed it.
