It's a ploy. By the white dude having a racist father, black people (viewers, and maybe even the people in the show) look on with disgust at the father and show sympathy toward the white boy for dealing with a racist father. So they use that sympathy to root for him to overcome aka take the team to the homeland when they been in the dumps for years.
