It basically depends on how the machine actually works, which could be 3 ways

1) The machine is a duplicator

Because this means the machine just makes an exact copy of Angier. If you believe that to be the case, than the original died a long time ago.

2) The machine teleports Angier, leaves a copy behind

I hate to bring up the book, but the machine actually teleports Angier. One side effect is that it leaves a copy behind

3) The machine actualizes both outcomes

Basically when you step into the machine, your in both a "teleported" and "non teleported" state, which results in 2 Angiers. This is what a lot of people, including myself, believe. As a result, there is no original. The movie seemed to be going in this direction.

#1 is the "true" answer

the movie's theme is bassically self sacrifice + living another persons life

its also set up when the little boy mentions "he killed him" when the bird trick is done...every time the teleporter trick is done, the old angier died in the tank only for the new one to live on until the next night

both 1 and 2 are correct

only thing to disagree is which one actually gets teleported into the pod to drown. u would assume the one copying himself would rather survive and let his copy die a painful death

i believe the copy lives, og dies, which leads the creed to the self sacrifice theme of the movie

imagine the great danton dying every time just to spite his competitor and try and run him out of business :whew: its so petty and vengeful

What you just said actually made no sense to the topic at hand.
This is about how the machine actually works. The movie is very vague about this.

they mention self sacrifice and the actual idea of "are you willing to get your hands dirty" several times

i believe plauisbly the great danton dies in the first trick and the copy lives on to do the trick the once more

On one hand, this thread just reminded me why this is one of my favorite movies of all time... :lawd:

...on the other hand, I'm now completely lost. I've seen it twice and thought I had it figured it out but now I'm second-guessing myself. :notsure:

again, that has nothing do with how the machine works man. It's you trying to make that fit into why you believe it works that way.

Here's the thing you have to keep in mind. Angier went to Tesla to build a TELEPORTATION machine. We are talking about a brilliant scientist. Teleporting and Cloning are 2 different things altogether. He is in the lab with the intention of building a teleporting device for Angier. So, I just don't see how anyone can dismiss the idea that the machine actually teleports Angier and leaves a copy behind, which is what actually happens in the book.

the third option makes the most sense to me, the risk would be too great otherwise.

the film version is slightly vauge but the most plausible answer is #1 ...

the idea interpreted is the real angier never got to do the prestige. First was the body double who was a drunk they found and cleaned up doing the prestige while Angier stood below the stage.

then when they got the machine, the original angier fell in to the tank and drowned while the new copy did the prestige.

looking at things from this angle, it leads one to believe angier's original never got to do the trick and each copy got to do it once before dying the next night. Thus the theme of "self sacrifice" and "getting your hands dirty" is brought full circle

Bordon and his twin have their own self sacrifice, both love a different woman but since they shared lives realized they couldn't both have them

both mean sacrificed so much just to be the best at their craft is the actual theme of the movie

Definitely

This isn't exactly word for word, but this basically kinda indicated it is the third one

Telsa " Don't forget your hat Angier"
Angier "Which one is mines?"
Telsa "They are all your hats"

Ya know, I consider this one of my favorite movies, and maybe I've been faded every time I've seen it, but I've got no idea wtf you guys are talking about in here :dead:

what do you think happens during the transported man trick?

original man dies, copy appears on other side and lives?
copy dies, the original is transported to the other side?
neither man is a copy and are really the same but one dies?

you keep bringing up these themes that are irrelevant to this subject.

You brought up the birds. You failed to mention another kid says "where is his brother?" That whole scene was foreshadowing the Bordon twins.

You mention living another life. Lord Cardlow was living as Angier. That was him living another life. Has nothing to do with the machine.

You mention "getting your hands dirty." Angier is taking Bordon's daughter and getting him executed. That's him getting his hands dirty.

Your basically saying Telsa, an ELITE scientist, just built a cloning machine, when Angier asked for a teleporting machine. It's like me asking someone to make a pizza and they bring me a hamburger. It's a teleporting machine. The question is how does it teleport? Very vague
