The Predator cowriter Fred Dekker has compared the latest instalment in the science fiction-action franchise to James Cameron’s
Aliens. “If you think of the first
Predator as
Alien, ours is much more
Aliens,” Dekker told filmmaker Adam Green (
Hatchet) on the latest episode of
the Movie Crypt podcast. “It’s not
Ten Little Indians, it’s not, Let’s kill off all of our characters, because we have a lot of characters, from a lot of different worlds and ideologies. I don’t mean other planets. It’s a lot of people doing a lot of things in a lot of locations.”
Dekker is cowriting the script for
The Predator with
Iron Man 3 and
The Nice Guys filmmaker Shane Black, who will direct the film. The pair previously collaborated on the screenplay for the 1987 cult classic
The Monster Squad, which was directed by Dekker.
Dekker also revealed that
The Predator will address the motivations of the franchise’s alien race of hunters. “There’s a lot of great stuff in the
Predator but it’s very simple,” he said, referring to the original John McTiernan-directed, Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring 1987 movie, which featured Black in a supporting role. “Guys get dropped in a jungle, and there’s an alien monster, and they fight the monster, and they all die except for one — spoiler alert! — and then the thing self-destructs, and there’s a nuke, and then [Schwarzenegger] flies away. It’s relatively simple. And our idea was, Okay, we know that story already. What’s behind the curtain? Why are they here? What are they doing? What’s the bigger picture of this?… I think these are questions you can answer, or at least explore, without defeating that sense of scariness. And who knows if their agenda’s changed?”
Dekker explained that he and Black had been inspired while writing the script by Cameron, Steven Spielberg, and Howard Hawks. “We’re aiming high,” he said.
The
Alien and
Predator franchises were combined in the 2004 film
Alien vs. Predator and 2007’s
Alien vs. Predator: Requiem.
According to Dekker,
The Predator will start shooting in late September.
