According to former 411 and WWE writer Dave Schilling, no one with any “real sway” in WWE believed in Kofi Kingston during his run as WWE champion last year. Previously, Schilling departed from his role in the WWE creative team in April 2019 after joining the company earlier in the year.
Kofi Kingston won the WWE Championship from Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 35 on April 7, 2019. He lost the title in an eight-second squash match to Brock Lesnar later that October in the FOX Network debut of Smackdown.
Schilling was responding to a tweet by DAZN and SportingNews’ Andreas Hale, who was speaking on a clip by Big on Talking Smack, where Big E says that Kofi Kingston “had his legs cut out from underneath him.” He also said it was disrespectful that Kofi Kingston got no other WWE world title opportunities after the loss to Brock and was relegated back to tag team matches.
Speaking on the subject, Schilling wrote, “I was there. I saw it. No one who had any real sway believed in Kofi.” He later added, “The plan was Kofi getting squashed by Brock from DAY ONE of his title reign. DAY ONE!” You can view those tweets below.

So I don't really believe the no one was behind him.

Confirmed what we basically already knew (Andreas Hale's tweets also confirm something we already knew). I had no problem with Brock getting a quick and brutal win on Kofi, but they couldn't have given him 3-5 good minutes and made him look somewhat decent?

Brodie Lee just annihilated Cody in 3 minutes to win the AEW TNT belt and no one thought he was any less dominant for taking roughly 170 extra seconds or so to put him away. I never thought Kofi was a main event level guy, but give the man SOMETHING if he's up there, fukk. Especially given the excellent build and match he had with Bryan to win the belt.

There would have been some money in having Brock get done like the Miz and turn around at the bell into a trouble in paradise. People would have wanted to see if the company was going to put him over Bork twice and cement his reign. You create a few positive outcomes out of that: 1) Kofi is now a made man and can step in and hold the belt at anytime when needed and be credible (think Edge), 2) The inevitable Bork loss is neither damaging to Kofi or upsets the fans as much, and 3) Brock doesn’t catch unnecessary heat for the squash
