So, how is the 9900 only 8 cores, when my 7900 has 10 cores? Intel needs to be more consistent with their naming conventions :patrice:

You're comparing the HEDT to the consumer platform

The consumer platform is consistent

Top End Chips

Lynnfield - i7-880 - 4/8 - P55 - LGA 1156
Sandy Bridge - i7-2600K - 4/8 - Z68/Z75/Z77 - LGA 1155
Ivy Bridge - i7-3770K - 4/8 - Z68/Z75/Z77 - LGA 1155
Haswell - i7-4770K - 4/8 - Z87/Z97 - LGA 1150
Broadwell - i7-5775C - 4/8 - Z97 - LGA 1150
Skylake - i7-6700K - 4/8 - Z170/Z270 - LGA 1151
Kaby Lake - i7-7700K - 4/8 - Z170/Z270 - LGA 1151
Coffee Lake - i7-8700K - 6/12 - Z370/Z390 - LGA 1151 v2
Coffee Lake Refresh - i9-9900K - 8/16 - Z370/Z390 - LGA 1151 v2

Top End Chips

Gulftown - i7 990X - 6/12 - X58 - LGA 1366
Sandy Bridge-E - i7-3970X - 6/12 - X79 - LGA 2011
Ivy Bridge-E - i7-4960X - 6/12 - X79 - LGA 2011
Haswell-E - i7-5960X - 8/16 - X99 - LGA 2011-v3
Broadwell-E - i7-6950X - 10/20 - X99 - LGA 2011-v3
Skylake-E - i9-7980XE - 18/36 - X299 - LGA 2066

The consumer platform has lower core and thread counts plus less PCI lanes

The trade off is better single core performance on the consumer platform and better prices making it viable for gamers.

The HEDT platform is a generation behind when it comes to architecture and isn't made for gamers

I dunno, breh. They just have the same naming strategy for the i9s. :manny:

But, anyway, now that the gaming, consumer CPUs have 40 lanes, I’m gonna go with them in the future. I only got the 7900x I have currently because it had 40 lanes and the 8700k only had 20 something lanes. Gotta go 16/16 gen 3. :yeshrug:

Though, if sli is dead, I guess it doesn’t matter anymore :patrice:

:dwillhuh:

They just moved the i9 to the mainstream platform. It's already been available for mainstream laptops

The i9 branding is new itself, so it's not like it's been an HEDT thing for long for people to only associate it with the HEDT.

For the majority of it's life SLI or Crossfire was pissing money down the drain as 90% of games didn't support it.

That's what we all said. But honestly at 8 cores, (you should get the other one), you'll be fine for a long time. Now it's up to game manufacturers to catch up

40 pcie lanes is a big step up for intel if they decide to do that. But SLi/crossfire is nearly dead
Maybe it's for nvme drives and other expansion cards

I meant more of, my interest in building computers etc has faded so much over the past few years that im sure a 9700k and 2080gtx will be good for me awhile

New RTX series = New EVGA series
Meet EVGA’s new XC Ultra series. The model presented here is RTX 2080 non-Ti. The Ti might actually be a triple-fan version of this design (we have not seen it yet). The card is equipped with translucent shroud, which appears to have RGB lighting effects (unless that stripe on the box is just a decoration).

EVGA’s XC Ultra is based on TU104 Turing GPU with 2944 CUDA cores. This model comes with 8GB GDDR6 memory and 256-bit bus.

Neither pricing nor clock speeds have been confirmed.

ASUS GeForce RTX series

ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 (Ti) STRIX, DUAL and TURBO series pictured - VideoCardz.com

We are not leaving any brand behind, here are ASUS RTX series.

I will save you the trouble, RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti models look exactly the same, so we will be showing you one picture of each variant.

The ROG STRIX RTX 2080 (my tongue!) has only slightly modified shroud, the biggest change is applied to is to the fans – all blades are connected in a circle. I’m not exactly sure why renders are so black, they might just very fresh?

The TURBO RTX series are now black too, with a tiny LED light hidden behind the blower fan.

It is rather surprising to see DUAL series here. This brand was always reserved for the mid-range segment (GTX 1060/RX580). So this is the first time we are seeing them in an upper-high-end segment. A much beefier heatsink compensates for dual-fan design.

some games use more threads especially in the future we will see, that's why I am recommending you get the 9900k instead (it will age better)
