What could go wrong?
HBO is giving fans their chance to actually visit Westworld — or, at least, the closest the network can simulate without inventing flawlessly realistic interactive androids.
The network is building a version of the show’s iconic town of Sweetwater outside Austin, Texas, during the upcoming South by Southwest festival.
Billed as a “Live Without Limits Weekend” experience, the network has rented out two acres of land for a Westworld-themed park that features recreations of locations and elements from the hit HBO drama series, including The Coronado hotel and the Mariposa Saloon. “No guidebook, no orientation, no regrets,” teases a video for the attraction below.
The simulation will start before guests arrive at the park, with fans being picked up in Austin in a “Delos Shuttle” and getting assigned a black hat or white hat.
At the park, fans can interact with the park’s “hosts” (played by actors who will not have sex with you), sample western-themed food and beverages, touch non-robotic horses, and hunt for clues to the show’s many mysteries. The hosts will be well-programmed on how to handle guest comments and questions, but feel free to try and stump them if you like.
The experience runs March 9-11. Spots are limited. Fans must pre-register at DiscoverWestworld.com to get on the list. Here’s a teaser video:
Westworld also has a panel at SXSW on March 10 with co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and cast members Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, and James Marsden.
UPDATE: Half of the passes available for the experience were snatched up within a couple hours of this story going live. The other half will be made available at some point during SXSW, the official Westworld Twitter feed will have updates.
Watch people start taking it to far and trying to molest the hosts. If I were an actor I wouldn't want that job.
Don't see this being any good
Westworld‘s feudal Japan-themed land isn’t called what you think.
We got a glimpse of this part of the HBO drama’s theme-park world-building — backstage at least — in the season 1 finale. The rebelling hosts (androids) passed a room full of traditional Japanese warriors in training. “It’s complicated,” a human tech worker tells them. The section was labeled with the cryptic initials “SW.”
Most have thought that “SW” stood for “Samurai World,” but the far-less-common guess is actually correct: “Shogun World.” (To be precise, the Westworld season 1 finale script called the land “SHOGUNWORLD,” one word, so quite possibly it’s more properly written as “ShogunWorld”).
“Shogun” is a term applied to military commanders in feudal Japan. Compared to Samurai World, this park name feels a bit more elegant.
Now whether we’ll actually see this park in season 2 — or any of the other five Delos Incorporated-owned theme parks besides Westworld — is not yet known. But HBO’s social media campaign teased “Park 2” earlier this month with this image which might, or might not, represent a region in a simulated version of Japan:
In the original 1973 Westworld film, there were two other parks in addition to Westworld, Roman World and Medieval World, neither of which have been even hinted about in the series, so it’s unclear if either will be a part of the show’s mythology. Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin once noted that Westworld could, in theory, have a Westeros World which would enable a crossover with Game of Thrones, though that’s probably a bit meta fan service-y for either HBO prestige drama to indulge in.
Westworld season 2 premieres on HBO on April 22. To see 19 revealing first-look photos, click here.
Looks like we are getting a healthy dose of Shogun World after all
