I wonder if that had to do with him not playing the final:comeon:

Xavi was the main man in Barca's since 2000, lets not do this. He almost transferred to AC Milan in like 2003 or 2004, iirc. He was also Spain's main man in the midfield too since the 2002 World Cup.

Barca werent that successful because they were a mess on and off the pitch, but Xavi has always been a top class player.

Guardiola 2004 after retiring:
"The emphasis, as far as central midfielders are concerned, is all on defensive work," he told Gabriele Marcotti of The Times of London. "Players like me have become extinct."

"Twenty years ago, many clubs had guys with my characteristics," Guardiola said. There was just one man he pinpointed as the exception. "Today, the only one I see is at Milan, with Andrea Pirlo."

While it would never happen, England might seriously wanna consider naturalising good foreigners who wanna play for them.
It makes you wonder if they teach how to pass at English football academies. English players treat the ball like a hot potato.
It's not really surprising that English players don't dare playing abroad. Their technical inabilities would get exposed.

The last English players who were actually comfortable with the ball on their feet were Gascoigne and Waddle (they could actually dribble and they had no problem adapting abroad).

Spanish legend Luisito Suarez believes “Andrea Pirlo is a more complete player than Xavi” Hernandez as Italy prepare to face the Iberians tomorrow.

“I have to point out first that Italy is my home, but my heart is Spanish,” Suarez told La Gazzetta dello Sport. The former Inter and Barcelona star won the Ballon d’Or in 1960.

“These are two champions with a great sense of positioning and know how to pick the right moment to start a move. They both have experience and technique.

“They are similar players, but in my view Pirlo has more of a range, can spread the play more and seek the longer passes.

“It’s true Xavi gets fewer passes wrong, but that’s because he plays them short and at most will pass 20 metres to the wings, so there are fewer risks. Andrea aims for more difficult passes and that brings with it the risk of getting it wrong sometimes.

“At the end of the day, I think Pirlo is a more complete player than Xavi. Andrea strokes the ball better, which is why he’s also better with free kicks and scores a few goals. He’s also more determined in the tackle, whereas Xavi is light and just uses his positioning to defend.

“If they were to exchange teams, they would both do well, but the Catalan seems built to play for Barcelona and Spain. The Italian is more adaptable and can speed up the pace of his teammates too. This is why I believe Pirlo is more important for Cesare Prandelli than Xavi is for Vicente Del Bosque,” concluded Suarez."

It's not even close really. Pirlo is on another level.

Oh please, those two have always been grossly overrated.
Scholes was woeful at the 2002 World Cup and Euros 2000 and 2004. He's always been anonymous in the biggest stages.
The acclaim that he's been getting lately smacks of nostalgia (very much like Giggs being selected EPL player of the year in 2009). It seems like when certain players get old, they suddenly get undeserved respect. Remember when old Giggs and Scholes were getting booed at Old Trafford in 2004 and 2005 for being past it?
Just because he doesn't give away possession like his teammates doesn't make him a genius.
Sorry, but he's not at Pirlo or Xavi level. Not even close.

Carrick yes. J Cole too.

the rest :rudy:

It says a lot about the British media that Parker is idolised whilst Carrick is marginilsed.

Honestly mate that was Sven's fault. He was very good at WC '98 and Euro 2000. He scored all but 1 of his England goals before 2002, that's no coincidence.

He's a class player.

English media (and fans) love those long Hollywood passes from Gerrard and Lampard... but when the game gets tight, they look lost.
Short-passing requires more technical skills and that's always been England's problem.
It starts at the youth academy level, where they spend more time running and shooting than anything else.
