Oh, by the way, is the not wanting to know the person thats in the meeting with you sitting backwards thing an allussion to a precursor of Alcohol Anonymous?

No, it literally has to do with the principles of psychoanalysis. There are a ton of subconscious ways our mind reacts to face-to-face interaction, most obviously reading the other person's reaction, which makes it more likely that you alter your responses (whether consciously or not) to trigger the reaction you want. Thus, in order to get the patient to speak freely, and give truthful answers instead of "correct" answers, it's best that he doesn't face the person he's talking to. Also, you create a personal disassociation where it's easier to admit to things you wouldn't normally admit to a person (because you fear their reaction). This is partly why in psychoanalysis the patient often lays on a couch looking at the ceiling, not at the psychoanalyst.

There's also a connection to it being similar to making a confession. You talk to a priest but you don't see the priest. You just talk to a voice and again, not being able to see their face, creates personal disassociation making it easier to confess those things you wouldn't confess to a person's face.

Cmon breh

That Henry shyt was god awful. The Cleary/Harriet stuff was kinda corny. Dont get me wrong it was a good episode just like every episode of The Knick, but the plot really went a little wonky the last few episodes

This won't even make the top 2 season finale list for this year, let alone all time. Hannibal and The Leftovers >>>
:camby:

You can see that shyt alright, but you can't see all the melancholic posturing on that hack of a show.

And overall it was a great season, some of developments fell too much into drama tropes for my liking (the random-ass Opal introduction to separate Algernon from Cornelia killing their story completely, Henry's heel turn with last episode's fire execution). Some things just felt a bit more forced where the first season just felt natural and real.
I didn't mind the Opal introduction - I do however think they could've brought her in as another point of Algie's nikka wake-up calls after he revealed his frustration to his pops - it would've given his character a more realized sense of self-identity. On that note, the whole affair between him and Neely was a theme that definitely wasn't explored enough. I wasn't expecting some dramatic, the-world-isn't-ready-for-our-love type thing, but a general forerunner to Loving v. Virginia would've been appropriate, given the show had already ventured down that path.

Nevertheless, it was a fitting ending to a great season.

You're crusade is over breh, give it up. You had people to back you last year. But now you are the only one left.

You know why I aint all up in The Affair thread talking about how weak the show is? Because I stopped watching it when I realized that. And there was nothing worth hate-watching about it. You continue to watch The Leftovers despite the fact that there is nothing to hate-watch. Because you love the show. You are putting on an act.

I don't want to rag too much on The Knick but, but I also want to point out that it kind of got a bit too Forrest Gump-ish in spots. Forrest Gump just happened to be around and/or the cause of a few significant historical events. It was a fun part of the movie. Well, The Knick tried to pull the same thing and may have gone a bit overboard by implying that Gallinger was going to have a hand in planting Nazi seeds.

I didn't know the show was set to run only 2 seasons and that Clive was only signed for 2. Hopefully they don't force it and let it end after this.

I don't think they go overboard with it on this show. It would be less interesting if the characters had no impact on the world at all. It's not like they came out and directly said that Gallinger was personally responsible for the Nazi party. Just that he went to Germany and influenced some pre-Nazis. He probably had less effect on the Nazis than people like Henry Ford.

If you want to see an example of a show that goes totally overboard with the Forest Gump effect, watch the 2nd season of "Halt and Catch Fire". Within a couple of months in the 80's, the main characters on that show invented multiplayer FPS shooters, cable modems, antivirus software, chat rooms, etc. It's entertaining just to see what real life thing they invent next.

And it wasn't like the historical themes were heavy-handed either - they were subtle and tactful, and most of all they ran within the premise of the show. Absolutely nothing "Forrest Gump-ish" about them at all.

Yup. And there were plenty of American doctors I'm sure that went to Germany, they really didn't do anything to make it ridiculous.

It's not like he was set up to teach at the university Mengele was going to study at.
