These Prizm cases that are $10K+ now were around $1,000 2-3 years ago. We're in completely uncharted territory with these prices. This used to be reserved for classic, older sets (think '86 Fleer Basketball per box or '96 Topps Chrome Basketball).

If you buy one of these cases, are you planning on opening everything? If so, grading is the only way you'll maximize your return. Unfortunately, the wait times are insanely long right now and if you use the quicker services, they cost an arm and a leg. It starts at $100/card for non-members for the lowest level, which could take 9+ months to get back. I'm not sure what the best rate you can find with bulk submitters is; maybe $50-75? It used to cost $10-20 to get most card graded before.

Damn, that big of a difference with those cases?

I would plan on getting some graded. What would the reason be to not open all of them? Just keep them sealed and hope it goes up in value and someone buys down the road?

It's like driving a car off the lot. Maybe you got a classic Rolls Royce that will appreciate over time but the more likely scenario is you have a Honda Accord.

If you keep it sealed and a player from that year becomes a Hall of Famer, every sealed box could have a lottery ticket in it and someone with money will always take a flyer on it.

You gotta grade now, man. I'm not sure what the recent price hikes will to do the grading game yet but that's what turns $20 cards into $150 and $800 cards to $8,000.

@BucciMane i agree with pretty much everything Regular P and GunRanger have said. And clouddd

Your best bet is to buy certain singles you want at these price points, imo

Not to say case is a bad idea, because I’m a big fan of sealed wax myself, but that with singles, you know exactly what you have and what you’re ROI is at any point. Case is speculation upon the speculation, essentially.

Also, all these resellers (steel city collectibles, blowout, DAcard world) are listing these boxes and cases at rape prices. So are the eBay resellers. It’s all exorbitantly priced. And like Regular said, you gotta hit a moonshot to even break even with a lot of these boxes and cases at current prices.

And agreed with the football chase. Brady and Mahomes are your best bet. Even guys like Rodgers and Wilson who are considered two of the best of this past decade and will surely be HoFers and two of the best QBs of this generation, they have “underachieved” according to most by only having 1 title.

Football hobby is ruled by QBs. And there seem to be only 2 sure things. Brady and Mahomes. And Mahomes is still speculation, with only 1 title and being so young. It makes it hard for me to advise football cases knowing that even if the 16th overall pick from 20XX draft class balls out, it may not move the needle AT ALL.

At least in basketball, if Tyler Herro turns into a perennial All Star, 2019 wax will shoot up even higher. He’s not Ja or Zion, but he can push the value of 19-20 wax.

In football, even if Edwards-Helaire goes for 2k rushing and 25 TDs next year, 2020 football wax will only go as far as Burrow/Herbert/Tua take it, imo

Appreciate the feedback you guys have given. Seems like singles are the way to go.

I was and am considering doing a case as I can finance it over 24 months, so I don't shell out a ton up front. Does that make a difference in your opinion, since I don't have to shell it all out up front? Or, no, since the odds are still vastly again me.

Those boxes look vastly overpriced to you?

Also, are there any cards you have seen in the $1,500-6,000 range that you would say are good buys right now? I'd definitely be interested if any of you have seen some as I might pull the trigger.

If any of you see any cards that you believe would be good buys (Under $10,000 for a card), let me know. If I end up buying one that you guys recommend, I'll send you over some BTC. I guess I'd prefer NFL cards, but if there are NBA ones that you believe are worth it, let me know.

I still really want to buy a case, but it seems like you guys are in agreement that they are overpriced right now.

Hmmm. I’ve been pretty inactive in terms of buying the past few months. Been focusing on trying to get the remainder of my collection in slabs. Also cash poor as I’ve been trying to diversify a bit by dumping more into crypto so I’m not so over-leveraged into cardboard.

Although these cases are very expensive, there’s nothing wrong with buying high and selling higher. The whole hobby has turned into this, raw, graded, sealed, whatever. Nothing is really “cheap” anymore. All I’ll say about cases is that I’m only able to hold at these current prices. There’s zero chance I’d ever rip boxes or cases at current prices. If I want to spend thousands on card(s), I’d rather just buy the single(s) I desire instead of dropping 3-4 figures on boxes and pulling a PJ Washington refractor as my big hit.

The two cases I have stashed will never be opened. Just holding for the right time to sell. Why should I take the risk of breaking open the wax and possibly having a dud case, when I can pass the risk off to the buyer and make a nice profit off flipping the sealed wax? That’s the way I look at it.

Durant, Kyrie, and Harden have been doubling/tripling over the past 1-2 months, in anticipation of an upcoming title, fwiw

Regular has said he sees a nice bump coming for Lavigne, and although I was hesitant to wholeheartedly agree before, breh looks like he’s about to have a juicy 3-5 year window upcoming.

My football is only Mahomes, with 1 Burrow card.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled for undervalued and drop a tag in here

Thanks for the post above @Codeine Bryant .

I get why you guys say you wouldn't open the cases if you did them. If I did buy one, I can tell you I'd open up the first case I had as I'd just be starting again. I forgot to mention I collected a lot in the 90s and early 2000s. I have to find find stash with signed Jerry Rice cards among others.

I guess I would just ask this one question. Let's say I could pay for of those cases I linked at 9-12k over the next four months. Do you firmly believe those cases are a rip off, or just really where the market is at and headed?

Again, I would open the first case as I would want too, and then I'd just buy singles.

So, I bought two of these.

2020 PANINI PRIZM FOOTBALL HOBBY BOX BLOWOUT CARDS | eBay

I completely misunderstood how the paypal credit worked. I thought since the credit limit it gave me was $3,900 (applied yesterday that as long as my monthly statements were below that, that I'd be fine, so I put in an order for about $20,000 and it kept getting rejected. So, I tried doing two of these boxes as a "trial" and it got approved.

I chose their 24 month option, but I'll probably pay it off within a month or two, I thought I was going to be able to have $3,900/month on my card, so I misunderstood, but maybe that's a blessing in disguise right now.
We'll see what happens, but I'm excited to get these boxes and see what happens.:manny:.

Signed up for one more live break, and that will be the last one I do for a while. Just wanted to get in one more time.

Ordered two boxes on the 2020 Panini Prizm Football Hobby Box cards, and they should arrive this week. Looking forward to it. Probably overpaid, but I'm fine with that for my first time.:manny:.

Edit: I bought them on Ebay from blowout which I know you guys said have crazy prices right now, but I wanted to just go a trustworthy route. And, in comparison to other sellers, it was close in price.

Shoulda bought it from their site like I linked in an earlier post. Woulda been cheaper but they have promo codes to knock a little more off: https://www.blowoutcards.com/

Anything you see on eBay from Blowout, Dave & Adams or Steel City Collectibles, you should be able to find cheaper on their own websites. They mark up on eBay to cover the fees associated with the platform.

I always do the six month option with Paypal Credit. There's no interest rate if you pay it off in time; the 24 month one generally does.

I wouldn't recommend any of those cards as buys. The first one you linked is the right set and brand but the grades aren't high enough. Anything less than a 10 on the autograph grade always brings it down for future sales. Better to have the auto ungraded than be anything below a 10. I'll do a little digging and see what I can find for sale on eBay/Goldin for recommendations.

You wanna get a few Scam cards just in case he breaks out this year, there's a few auctions up right now that fit the bill:

2011 Playoff Contenders Cam Newton ROOKIE RC AUTO #228 PSA 10 GEM MINT | eBay

Contenders on-card rookie autographs are always among the most desired RCs. With those and numbered cards, you have to be careful for trimming even if it's been graded, especially when it's going through PWCC or Probstein. There's a guy on the Blowout forums I run stuff by to make sure they aren't trimmed. I can have him check on anything for you guys in this thread if you ever have questions. He always responds.

2011 Topps Chrome Ball Over Shoulder Cam Newton ROOKIE RC #1 PSA 10 GEM MINT | eBay

Lot 2x 2011 Topps Cam Newton #200 Stands in Background Rookie RC PSA 10 Patriots | eBay

PSA 10 Topps and Topps Chrome (like Prizm) RCs have become established as flagship cards now so they're always a relatively safe buy at prices like Scam is getting now.

To really get a feel for a player's market value, I would save a bunch of eBay searches and follow listings on a daily basis. That will really help you get a read on each player's worth and where trends are going. Follow auctions to start with because most Buy It Now/Best Offer stuff is overpriced.

So for football guys I'd be looking at rookie year stuff:

2019 Kyler Murray PSA 10
2020 Justin Herbert PSA 10
2020 Joe Burrow PSA 10
2011 Cam Newton PSA 10
2018 Lamar Jackson PSA 10
2018 Josh Allen PSA 10
2018 Baker Mayfield PSA 10
Etc.

Damn, I didn't know you could do paypal credit through their site like you are saying. I thought I had to buy from eBay for it. At least now I know.

Appreciate the information.

If you end up seeing anything at anytime, please tag me and let me know. I think I will just buy a few of those Cam cards soon.

Let me ask you this. Hypothetically the Patriots win the Super Bowl this year and Cam plays well during the season and wins Super Bowl MVP. In terms of value for cards, would a card of his THIS year typically increase more than any other year since his performance would be this year?
