I have a couple grand I want to drop on some cards.

Is rookie Mahommes the one to go with for the NFL? What about the NBA?
NFL: Lamar, Mahomes, Watson, and soon to be Burrow and Tua

NBA: take your pick. Curry, Durant, LeBron, Kawhi, Giannis rookies are solid investments. Harden and Lillard are probably a bit underrated, but probably because they’re not expected to win titles. Luka, Ja, Zion are all the rage. Trae and Shai are underrated.

In NFL, only QBs really retain value. Nobody is checking for Emmitt or Moss rookie cards. But Brady... Even Baker rookies still go for solid money

NBA, scoring wings/guards tend to fare the best. Jordan Kobe LeBron Bird Magic Curry Durant. Nobody is checking for Dirk or Duncan like that.

You’re essentially chasing elite QBs in football and box office with possibility of getting a ring or two in basketball

I personally chose Mahomes for NFL and Luka for NBA (bias).

Luka has inherent extra value being that he’s an elite white prospect in a predominantly black sport and the majority of the hobby is dominated by white male collectors. There’s a ton of hobby interest in Luka. Has a unique niche that a lot of players can’t touch.

He’s “relatable” :mjpls:

I collected cards a lot growing up. This was back in the 80's and early 90's. Don't think I had any thing valuable though. But I used to get the Beckett card guide and price them and put'em in plastic.

I gotta get all my shyt, to see what I got. I thought the card industry had been down though.

I have dozens of Kobe searches saved on eBay. Please, do not buy any Kobe cards right now. Prices are absolutely outrageous today.

Liked @Regular_P said, only Panini is the official trading card partner of the NFL and NBA

If you want Jordan, LeBron, or Simmons autos, you’ll have to go to Upper Deck, however. They signed exclusive deals with them. They still make panini cards for LeBron and Simmons. But no autos or memorabilia.

As far as product:

Prizm (already released a month ago, hobby boxes are stupid expensive, retail packs are always sold out at Wal-Mart and Target but still worth checking). Prizm is the “standard” set for NFL and NBA

Optic - drops this coming week. Panini Donruss Optic is tremendous value. Their Rated Rookie holos have become very valuable. Keep an eye out. Optic has quickly began to battle Prizm as the “standard” set amongst NFL and NBA collectors in the last 1-2 years. Specifically because of the Rated Rookie cards.

And remember, the one you want is donruss OPTIC, not regular donruss

Panini Chronicles is good. Releases later this year (close to late spring). This can be had at your local Targets and Wal Marts

Those are probably your best 3 retail, affordable brands

Contenders is solid, but you only get one hit per box. And it’s a lot and lot of filler. Contenders Optic can be pretty good. That drops later this year. Both of these sets are for NFL and NBA

I would still take a regular ass donruss zion auto tho...frfr Optic >>>>>>prizm for me,i love those holos....

Mahomes cards have been on fire most of the year and they will be peaking right before the Super Bowl. @Codeine Fiend Dream Team gave a lot of advice. I'll piggy back and lay down my two cents as well.

I would say Mahomes is second in value to every NFL player ever at the moment behind Brady. He's been incredible so far but let that sink in. His shyt goes for more than Manning, a guy who won five MVPs, a couple Super Bowls and had a bunch of passing records when he retired. So if you're buying into Mahomes right now, his prices have basically factored in multiple MVPs, Super Bowls and other records.

Now, maybe he'll accomplish all of that and go down as the GOAT or top three. But there's a bar set for him now and if his play slips at all, those prices are gonna come down accordingly and people will move onto the next hot thing. Plenty of guys were worth a ton but fell off due to injury or play and their cards carry minimal weight. I think he's the real deal and will continue his level of play or close to it but keep that in mind if you decide to buy some of his cards.

Maybe you believe in Kyler Murray. His cards are fairly reasonable right now. If he breaks out next year, his prices will explode too.

If you are buying to sell later, I would always recommend buying graded cards, particularly high grade. Know that PSA 10 Gem Mint cards carry a premium over BGS 9.5 Gem Mint cards. BGS 10s carry a premium over both but personally, I think it's a waste of money to pay that premium. Stick with a PSA 10 for less.

There has been a trimming scandal boiling over in the past couple years so even if the card is graded, do some homework on it beforehand, especially for numbered cards. WorthPoint | Antiques, Art and Collectibles - What's it Worth? | WorthPoint and Market Price Research - PWCC (will need a free account for this one) are your best resources for research.

For high end RCs for both football and basketball, the National Treasures RPAs are always the most coveted rookie card now. That's as high end as it gets but there's also Flawless, Impeccable and Immaculate as well.

There's more but I can't think straight right now. I can answer any other questions you have later.
