I know in the comics it was a situation where DC couldn't use Captain Marvel as the title of any books but they could still refer to the character as Captain Marvel within the books.
Not sure how it works with films though.
Another thing I loved is how the movie so effortlessly set up its sequels without being gratuitous. The teases and lore was woven right into the movie. So many other superhero movies from both Marvel and DC struggle with this, often stopping the movie to tell us "Hey. This thing is coming next" or hiding it in some easter egg. Here, if you know the character, they gave you enough to be excited about without sacrificing any story.
In particular,
We got Black Adam's backstory explained and a short look at the realms of magic. The post-credit scene assured us Sivana would return teamed up with Mister Mind.
Black Adam's movie plot is all right there. They just need to get the team together to write the script.
And as soon as they showed the caterpillar in the Rock of Eternity I knew Mr. Mind would be one of the post-credits scenes.
Like say if you a big fan of Blade 1 & 2 and feel like they the best movies ever, then you gonna feel this movie is mediocre or trash due to all the comedy, quips, humor, jokes and the fact that it caters to kids.
But if you genuinely like most CBM, you’ll like this
They got the tone completely right, it builds the story very seriously at the start with a confidence that it will capture the audience once it really kicks into high gear, and when it does, it delivers.
It's self aware enough to make the right jokes at the right time about the premise or "comic book-y" stuff but never devolves into parody, and most of the humor is a hit. The Marvel family (or I guess Shazam family these days) are instantly likeable which makes the finale much more rewarding.
They also put in a lot of the lore without delving into unnecessary exposition and all in all is just a perfect origin story.
Random spoiler-ish sidenotes:
loved seeing DJ Corona and Adam Brody at the end, those two have been part of fan castings since forever and these roles are perfect for them to finally get their spot in a superhero movie.
I marked out like a goofball over Mr Mind, loved that they didn't change his look whatsoever and his lines in the mid-credits scene were perfect.
I actually feel it is even more of a shame now that Henry Cavill's future as Superman is up in the air because a cameo would've made the ending even better.
Saw the early screening on Saturday and the movie was practically perfect. Only thing that would have pushed it over the top was a black Adam cameo or a real Superman cameo. This movie hit all the right notes and was everything that I love about DC comics.
