Defense
Effective aggression
Ring generalship
Clean and Hard Punching

i don't see any criteria here can be given to Ward even per round. anyone that will say that Ward took last 6 rounds specially 10
should stop watching boxing. finished watching the replay in slow mo and muted.
to be a champion you need to beat the champion, Ward only needs 3 judges + 1 Ref and Las Vegas with cheering americans. ROBBERY
rematch should be in Russia to avoid WW3...:shaq:

Defense - you shouldve seen that once Dre loosened up, Kovalev was never able to hit him as easy for the rest of the fight as he did in the first 3 rounds.

Effective Aggression - early, Ward was backing up the entire fight and Kovalev was stalking him. Once Ward started getting rough with him he wasnt stalking anymore. He was merely "following" him trying to land a big shot. Andre started coming forward in the 2nd half of the fight and Kovalev couldnt do anything. So when Andre came forward, he was effective, when he went backwards in the 2nd half of the fight he was effective. Effective aggression doesnt = coming forward. Counterpunching is aggression too you know?

Ring Generalship - made Kovalev fight when he didnt want to. Kovalev's plan was to box from the outside and jab and pot shot. Had he been willing to work on the inside he couldve won the fight convincingly. Andre circled away from his power, used the jab to good effect and tied up Kovalev to keep his rhythm off.

Clean Hard Punching - Kovalev did this throughout the fight, but most of it was in the first 3 or 4 rounds. 2nd half of the fight, he lost the jabbing contest and Ward was getting the best of the bodywork. Kovalev did land some great body shots of his own but there were more spread out while Andre made a concerted effort to work his body in the 2nd half of the fight.

This fight was close and lived up to its expectations!

I thought ward was gone within those 3 rounds
.scary. he looked small compared to sergey.
Then the turnaround happened .. brilliant. credit to kovkk he was still throwing that jab.close close fight..either man could have won.

Rematch in 2017!!!

fukk hbo!!!

just rewatched it sober

1-3 kov
4 and 5 ward
6 kov
7-9 ward
10 kov
11 and 12 ward

ward 7 rounds to 5

i think the judges got it spot on

personally i didnt see any swing rounds
only round i feel is debatable was round 4
round 12 if you want to stretch it, but i feel like ward won it clearly at the end with his body work

letterman giving kov round 9 was disgraceful

i look forward to the rematch

Rd 1: Kovalev.
Rd 2: Kovalev 10-8.
Rd 3: Ward
Rd 4: Ward
Rd 5: Ward
Rd 6: Kovalev

I thought it was really close to the half way mark. Kovalev gets the drop in Rd 2, but Ward landed maybe his best punch in Rd 3. Adjusted to the range, and started to show his class a little more but then Kovaloev had a strong 6th but I felt that was the last we saw of Kovalev to the finish.

Rd 7-12: Ward

The back end of the fight was Ward circling, in and out with nice shots, Kovalev hitting the headlock everytime Ward wanted to hurt him inside, and basically just showing his overall quality. I was surprised it was judged so close personally.

I like both fighters, but I don't really see how anyone can cry robbery or trash boxing for this result.

Also worth noting, that as a UK breh, the American boxing media is terrible. Lampley and Kellerman are incredibly bias. Kellerman only ever cares about trying to instigate the next fight and never gives a winner credit. The sportscasters in the UK are much more intelligent when it comes to big fights.

Kovalev is a great great fighter. I have tremendous respect for his skill, but he will NEVER beat Andre Ward unless he is willing to fight. Someone mentioned Castillo....if you look at the first fight with Floyd....when Castillo was giving it to Floyd, Floyd stood there inside and FOUGHT with Castillo. Thats why Floyd won. The 2nd fight, he chose to make it easier and just boxed him. There are soooo many other examples of this. Had OLDH wanted to "fight" against Tito and Mosley (rematch) he wouldve won. One thing that Floyd and Ward have in common to me is, they are both severely underrated in terms of their PHYSICAL strength. No fighter has been able to physically bully them.

Nah, breh, these are still human beings at the end of the day.

of course BUT the men were tougher because they had to train for 15rds.

a lot yall box heroes today would lose cause they aint prepared for 15 rds its that simple, its not that they cant do it.

Meanwhile, while ya making no sense online I'm on the airplane chatting with Teddy Atlas and Larry Merchant- two guys who know more about boxing than all of us. They both scored the fight for Kovalev and both stated verbatim there was no way a Russian was going to win a decision in the US against a US gold medalist, not with the odds on a Kovalev decision victory being 4/1 and the odds on a draw being 18/1
oh really ? Kov got big here. He was never known in Russia. I saw him fight in Russia and he fought at a damn gymnasium, guy. They can have whatever card they want. I respect Teddy and I have to agree to disagree. Also, Teddy was saying he knew Ward was gonna win on ESPN. He also gave props. As for Merchant, fukk him. He's a racist POS

ward's strength surprised me
felt like kov was holding for dear life at times
he wanted no part of ward's inside game

another thing I want to know is why nikkaz bringing GGG name into this thread :what:
GGG is not as good as Ward or Kovalev. He just isnt. People talmbout he cuts off the ring. :cmon: against what opposition? He couldnt cut the ring off on Brook. did you see him chasing Brook around at the end of the fight? GGG has GREAT hands. Thats what makes him look so good. Hard accurate puncher with excellent technique. Other than that, he is nothing but a mere stalker who hunts down smaller guys like Brook and is too skilled for guys like Stevens who lack defense and boxing skill. Him vs Canelo is a pick'em fight IMO. I slightly favor Canelo.
