What's funny is that my pancake 40 was my favorite lens on my 5d3, but not so much on this R8, which is tiny in comparison. I think i need lenses on it that extrude a little more. I placed my control ring adapter on it the other day to simulate a pancake and it didn't feel very comfortable to me. It did feel damn near perfect however after I attached the 40mm to it. I'm actually leaning towards picking up the 24mm 1.8 for this this upcoming trip to use as a nighttime street lens. The wider fov, speed and image stabilization will probably trump the form factor of the 28 during this trip for me.

The 14-35 balances really well without any grip issues for me, but I do have a JJC extension plate coming in the mail for it right now just to try out. I like the fact that it gives the body a touch more real estate, as well as including a built-in arca tripod mount, which the canon ones don't. I am returning a knock off version of the JJC to amazon today as the pinky part is a bit more vertical and dug into my finger if I held it too tight. The jjc also includes a folding strap attachment point which I like along with the cold shoe portion being flush with the body unlike the amazon version. I also like that this plate sits the camera flat which some of the others do not. The JJC is a half ounce heavier and a smidge shorter from what I'm looking at the spec sheets posted online fwiw.

Here's the plate:
I hope Canon comes out with a RF 40mm. When I had micro four-thirds the 20mm f1.7 was one of my favorite lenses. I like the balance of slightly zoomed in from the 35 and a good bit wider than the 50. I forgot all about the 24mm they came out with, I need to check it out. I’m done buying lenses for a minute though.

Looking forward to pictures from the trip if you end up wanting to post any.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of 50mm. It's always felt like a slightly intrusive focal length to me if that makes sense. I love 40 though, and part of the reason I decided on the 24 over the 35 prime this time around is because with the rf adapter I got, the 40 seems to be almost as good as the rf 35, sans a bit of auto focus speed and stabilization. Also, i figure since everything in europe is so much more condensed i figure I'll probably get more use out of the wider end that the 24 offers.

B&H seems to be having a sale on canon stuff right now. Just copped a rf 24 1.8 macro for $399 ($100 off). )You have to add it to your cart to see the additional discount it seems)

Despite the lukewarm reviews it gets online, it seems like a solid lens from all the real world use sample galleries I've been looking at.

Most new prime lenses are really good and the biggest limiting factor is the photographer. Maybe reviewers are just jaded since they get access to high end lenses all the time.

If a reviewer doesn’t show good real world pictures I realize they’re just a tech reviewer and not an actual photographer. How are test charts and spec sheets going to tell me how this lens works, show me. That flick gallery shows me it’s a great lens and good value for the money.

At the top.
New Sony A7C II, A7CR, 16-35 GM II announced ..
Nothing I’d cop but it feels like almost too many overlapping options

The bolded is what I’ve been gathering from some of the videos I’ve seen about them and your thoughts mirror mine. It’s an endless cycle of gear. The Petapixel podcast went over how many models Sony has in the Alpha and Z lineup and it’s something stupid like 15+ cameras that are in production.

Yup I remember people slamming the rf 16. Literally it is the only lens I take when I travel
