Camera newbie photo time!
I went and got a Sony RX10 in a fit of spending last month's TSLA stock market money. It's my first non "point-and-shoot" or phone camera, so I'm at the start of the learning curve.

Here's some test photos I took last night, through a chain link fence. I learned that it's HARD to get a camera to automatically focus when zooming through a chain link fence, and I'm too much of a newbie to really know how to focus manually. The last out of focus shot below came out all "artistic" and pretentions looking, but I kind of like it:

Edit: changed to links that don't take up the whole window

I was really hoping this would come in a lot cheaper than $2K but with the rumored Sony A7c supposedly debuting with a $2K price tag, I’m already getting prepared for the A7IV to be the same price as the R6.

If I was more of a photographer than a videographer, I’d be seriously looking at Nikon. They got it right with the Z5.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
Of course they did after I chased down a camlink

Gonna grab a sigma 16mm this weekend
I been waiting on them to go back to regular prices and this popped up today.

Fine print says it doesn’t do camera audio though. So you still have to plug in or use internal mic on the computer. I’ll still be getting a cam link until they get that squared away

More newbie crap to pollute the group. The skills aren't there, but the setting/location is good. I promise not to waste more space until I get better at this:

Nice, definitely shoot plenty until you are comfortable and pleased with results. If you are not in manual mode I would say try that so you understand the basic of camera controls with shutter speed and aperature. Your ISO settings will come into play as well. Keep posting as well.

Thanks. I've finally learned how to manually focus the camera, so I'm making progress in that way.

Since you mentioned manual setting, I have a quick newbie "what am I doing wrong" question. I took these nearly identical photos today, one with the Sony and one my Pixel 4 XL.

Sony RX10:

Google Pixel 4:

I notice the sky in the Sony version of the picture is way "overexposed" compared to whatever software magic Google is automatically working on its version.
What camera setting has the most effect on something like is? Is it the "Exposure compensation dial" ?

Two questions:

1. What version of the RX-10 do you have? Just curious.

2. Ae you shooting RAW?

1. RX10 IV.
2. I didn't make too many changes to the settings, but by default the "Quality" setting is set on "Fine" (which is one of the JPEG settings).

1. Nice. I had the Mark 1 version and I’m always surprised looking back at some of my old photos how many of my favorites were taken with that camera. You have a really good piece of kit there. I gave mine to one of my former players and I miss it.

2. Shoot RAW, always. If you want to get something up on social media fast, shoot RAW + (Very Fine) JPG. For the shot you posted above, I would expose for the highlights (the sky) and brings the shadows (the rocks in the foreground) up in post. Shooting RAW will give you the necessary room to balance shots like that out.

Manual focus can be handy in certain situations, especially in your post further up trying to get shots through fences. @KBadd answered your question for getting those photos right. RAW and shooting Manual mode will give you the most control over your shots, it will take time to get it but once you do, you'll see you have way more creative control.
