No Whammies!!
I owned an FZ300 and sold it about a year ago and have had a little seller’s remorse, more for the video capabilities than the stills quality. Don’t get me wrong, it can take good photos and the lens is quality, especially since it’s a constant 2.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It allowed me to get photos at football/basketball games that I could only dream of with my phone. However, it’s the video that can really amaze for a camera you can get for $300 used.

All in all, it’s a good cam to learn on and a solid tool just to keep in your tool bag. Fantastic all-in-one travel cam when you don’t want to take your expensive kit. The next time I see a used one on B&H, I’m getting it again.
Would it be worth it (over my phone) just for still photos? I rarely take video.
I'm not that knowledgeable about cameras, but I just watched a youtube video review that recommended stepping up to Fz1000 because it has a 1" sensor. But that's not weatherproof, so it looks like the cheapest 1" weatherproof camera I can find is the Canon Powershot G3 X:

But, now we're talking about a camera that costs more than twice as much.

I would say yes it’s worth it for still photos simply because you can zoom out to 600mm with a constant 2.8 aperture. The image quality will be about the same but it’s a much more versatile photo taking tool than a phone. The FZ300 also has 4K photo so you can extract stills from 4K video.

Now I'm less sure what to do. Looks like there's a place in Canada that has that Canon Powershot G3x for about $520 US dollars.
Canon PowerShot G3 X Digital Camera

Starting to wonder if that might be worth it over the Lumix.
The reviews of the Canon seem good, but there seems to be less of them so I guess its less popular.

@shutterguy

Goddamn you make Cleveland look good

Thanks fam, love hitting this city with the gear.

Nice I've spent some time in cleveland. Had a polish boy, been at a bar where shots were going off, went to a shaker vs. cleveland heights? Football game

Anywho nice shots I'm planning on flying the drone over the same thing in Charlotte

Thanks, man then polish boys is good as fukk, usually get them at B&M bbq or Whitemores. Ain't never heard anybody visit the city and say anything bad about them. Yea, there is a lot areas to visit here. We have live music at Edgewater Beach and Wade Oval Circle. Unfortunately like everywhere else Corona came through and shut down all the outside fairs, festivals, and functions. I had all kinds of plans this year to shoot and network.

What prompted this was that I saw this out in the parking lot leaving work on Friday, and I couldn't help thinking "Damn, I wish I could zoom in!"

I also want to be able to do better "City Skyline off in the distance" photos, like this:

Gotcha.

If you just want one camera that has a long zoom range and don’t want to invest a lot of money in lenses, then the FZ300, for the money, is a good choice.

If you want something with the same zoom range but better image quality, get the Sony RX-10 III or IV. I had a Mark 1 version of it and to this day, I’m still amazed at the quality of some of the photos I took with that camera. It has a much larger sensor than the FZ300 and the lens is in a class by itself.

Also, don’t be afraid to buy used gear. Most of the stuff I cop these days is used and when buying from places like B&H and KEH, you can be assured you’re getting a quality product and they have generous return policies.

The RX-10 was the one I was referring to when I mentioned "triple the price".
From what I'm seeing the Mk III version is when they increased the zoom from 8x to 25x, and even used those are pretty expensive.

You can find a Mark III version used for about $6-700 and if you just want one camera that can shoot just about anything and can legitimately be the only camera you ever have to buy, it’s well worth it. The images it can take are amazing for a fixed lens camera. I used to take moon shots with the Mark 1 version I had and would crop in to fill the frame and you would’ve never known the difference. The only reason I don’t have it any more is because I gave it to one of my former players who took up photography in college, but I’d buy another one in a heartbeat. Great cameras.
