GH5
Just got it yesterday. My first camera was an SL1. I outgrew it pretty quick, but I wanted to get an introductory camera to see how serious I was about photography and video.
I shot a few music videos, work on editing a few corporate videos for free as experience.
I recently showed the videos to my current employer and they were so impressed that they contracted me separately to shoot and edit a recruitment video for my Human Resources team.
I figured since this is my first real contract gig I should go ahead and get a better camera.

I went with the GH5 for the video capabilities and for budget reasons. I wish I could have gotten the A7Riii or even the A7Rii but I also have a recording studio and I have a few major upgrades/investments coming up that I have to consider.

I'm excited though. I was able to get a lot of use out of the lowly SL1 and really get a solid understanding of photography and videography. This new camera is going to take my work up to another level.

If you kept your SL1 lenses you should get a Metabones speed booster Ultra 0.71 lens adapter for your GH5, it will boost the effective aperture of your EF-S lenses by 4 stops and it will reduce the crop factor from 2x in Cinema 4K to 1.4x in cinema 4K which gives the footage more of a true cinema widescreen look. If you mostly have full frame EF mount lenses then I'd recommend going with the Speedbooster .64x XL which is cheaper by $100.

4 stops? 1 perhaps 1 1/3 at best.

last stupid question for the brehs

When i use the 35mm does it automatically give me those cinematic black bars on the top and bottom? I like that... I like that alot

and also, why do i need a dedicated 35mm lens when the lens that comes with the kit can do 12-60mm

Thanks

The black bars are called cinemascope, 2:3:9 or 2:40 or anamorphic field of view. Often films aren't shot with anamorphic lenses but use whats called a 2:40 spherical crop (which is what you want to do). Just learn how to do it in the editing program. Read about anamorphic lenses.

Yeah those metabones things are dope. Ive used them on that little black magic pocket camera with a zeiss zf 15mm 2.8. That was a cool look, effectively a 26mm @ f2, real cool little handheld joint.

micro 4/3 can be really good, i feel like it can look great if you're trying to get a gritty, docu/drama look i.e. 'The Wrestler'. In other words, it can be great for a 16mm film look. The GH5 packs a lot of info into the video files. Well worth it as a camera.
