I've done weddings, portraits, and product photography and made money from it. Sometimes people post jobs on Craigslist, others come from networking or word of mouth. A friend of mine worked for a city mag and did restaurant and food shoots, made good money from it. Check this place.......

Honestly for street stuff you can go a few ways, 10-50mm, 24-70mm, 24-105mm, thats just 3 off top, I'd personally look around those focal lengths.

Nice shots btw!

If you looking for something like a walk around lens that's going to give you pretty good quality I'd suggest something like the sigma or tamron 17-50. For most of my non-portrait stuff my tamron 17-50 f2.8 stays on my camera. But if you're looking for a cheap portrait lens might as well knock on a nifty fifty (50mm 1.8).

Cheers!

So decided to grab the 17-55mm f2.8 from Sigma or Canon

The canon version has been described by highly regarded people as the best non L lenses there is for crop/APS-C cameras. But it's like £699. Whilst the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 is just over £300

A lot of people said the glass counts. So I'm going to save for another month and just get the Canon

I have it, bought it used from a friend, I love it, use it for quite a bit of shooting.

For portraits you use

Lost me on that 1st sentence....

For me I've used my 50mm f/1.8 and 17-55mm f/2.8 for portraits. Fast moving action, I've used Canon's 70-200mm f/4 L and the 1st gen 100-400mm push-pull lens.

So I'm thinking of these three lenses

Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon 70-200mmm pricey but :to:
Canon 35 1.4

Any third party equivalent that might be cheaper. ??

I like it, I've used it for portraits and fast action shots. With great lighting it shines. I'll have to dig up some shots I took with it and post up.

Your other post with the Canon lenses, Tamron and Sigma will have equivalents that are half the cost of Canon or more.

The Canon 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens for the money, it is tack sharp, drawback is its plastic and noisy focus motor. The f/1.4 is metal, better construction, little higher price, USM makes it quiet and fast focus, price is about $300 vs the $90-$100 for the 1.8.

On a full frame camera, i would rather get the 35 1.4 than the 50mm

You can always rent lenses until you have enough paper to purchase one. Or if you have other friends in photography you can borrow their lenses
