Quick question

So I've decided to grab a Canon 80D. I'll mainly be using it for city shooting (NYC, London, Continental Europe, etc). But the only part I'm unsure about is the lens

Shall I go prime or zoom? Some of the zoom ones I've seen haven't got the aperture I think I'll need (18-55mm f3.5-5.6 example of zoom lens). As this will be a camera I'll also be shooting family and general music/party events I also wanted to have a decent portrait lens.

So just wondering what you guys suggest. My best option would be a one lens job if I could

Most people either start off with something used, or an inexpensive new DSLR. Just about all the camera companies great camera bodies (Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc.) to choose from, only difference will be full frame or crop sensor. I started with Canon Digital Rebel and have stayed with Canon ever since. From them you can jump into the T-series. Scenery and skylines, there is quite a few lenses you can get, a 10-50mm, 18-55mm, 24-105mm, sports you would want something further like a 70-200mm.

What are the budgets you two are working with?

Like $500 now, but I can extend to like $700 if need be.

If you looking for something like a walk around lens that's going to give you pretty good quality I'd suggest something like the sigma or tamron 17-50. For most of my non-portrait stuff my tamron 17-50 f2.8 stays on my camera. But if you're looking for a cheap portrait lens might as well knock on a nifty fifty (50mm 1.8).
