I know I used to think the same thing and wouldn't go over f/2.8 at night and wouldn't go below 1/30secs.
Nope I talked to this professional photographer that started shooting in nightclubs and he showed me different. Even though he was shooting with a D700(FX) he showed me that as long as I keep my subjects still to a certain extent I'd be able to get the shot I was looking for.

He said there was no reason to have my f-stop at 2.8 or below because I didn't need that type of depth of field in a nightclub setting.

Just keep your hands steady and you should be straight.

Do you have a speedlite though?

Its best to get the speed lite that's from your camera Manufacturer.

I was told the only time to get a speed lite of a third party brand is when your using it as an external off camera flash in commander mode.

I guess since you shoot canon a 430EX II or higher

Craigslist is your friend.

I bought my Nikon sb-600 for $175 used they go for $250+ used on amazon

well... I know fro knows photos does a raw edit every week.
