As was expected with the buildup, UFC 182 was the most successful event for the company since UFC 168, with early cable estimates of the show headlined by Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight title coming in at between 740,000 and 820,000 pay-per-view buys.

The number was more impressive given it went head-to-head with the Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers NFL playoff game that drew 28 million viewers, and both the NFL and UFC strongly hit the adult male demographic. Another key is that when UFC draws out of its usual range for a big fight, it is usually hitting the sports fan audience, so going against the NFL playoffs impacts the bigger shows more than the shows that draw the usual UFC pay-per-view base audience.

The UFC takes the wrong approach when it comes to big fights. They tend to fill the rest of the card with mostly below average fights. Instead, they should be looking to fill the rest of the card with exciting match-ups to permanently keep those extra viewers that big fights attract.
Couldn't help but think while I was watching that fight in a bar that was packed with excited people which is usually crickets for ufc that they squandered A great opportunity with the shytty card they put together to go a long with jones vs Cormier

I thought Lombard/Burkman was going to provide excitement, but that fight was terrible. Even Cowboy, who is very exciting provided a mediocre fight. I was at the bar with my homies too (most of them don't watch MMA) and they were disappointed with the event. They enjoyed most of the main event though (minus the 5th round).

They have enough fighters to make exciting match-ups. I just disagree with the way the UFC goes about doing things: 'This main event will sell, so let's fill the rest of the card with mostly sub-par fights'. It should be 'This main event will attract a lot of casuals, let's make sure we put on exciting fights to get them hooked'
