Mbem-Bosse

Michigan's pursuit of Elysee Mbem-Bosse was a bunch of nothing sandwiched in between an early and late pursuit of the prospect. While the Wolverines staff chased Jonathan Jones and Dontavious Jackson (along with Devin Bush Jr.), Mbem-Bosse looked like a SEC lean to Auburn early and often throughout the spring and summer. At this point, Michigan wasn't necessarily recruiting him very hard, if at all.

However, it was the hiring of Don Brown that spurred a reigniting of the interest in the Ellenwood (GA) prospect. Brown likes explosiveness on the edges and bulk in the middle with his linebackers, and Mbem-Bosse fits that bill to a tee. Brown viewed his film and believed that pushing for him was worth it when coupled with what appeared to be fading chances with the aforementioned Jones.

When Chris Partridge and Don Brown left Mbem-Bosse's in-home visit on Wednesday, the strong belief is that Michigan would seal the deal this weekend. They did it, and they did it in spades. Partridge continues to establish himself as an elite recruiter outside of the New Jersey area, as he was able to close on Devin Bush Jr. despite the D.J. Durkin hiring, and played a major role in swooping in and grabbing Mbem-Bosse at the last second as well.

Mbem-Bosse wasn't being pursued by in-state Georgia, but scored late offers from Florida and Texas A&M along with a continued pursuit by Oklahoma. Those are four-star level programs that Michigan beat in about three weeks' work for his services.

Uche

One of my five questions leading into National Signing Day was how Don Brown would do on the recruiting trail, as he's been labeled as a complete unknown coming from Boston College.

While one commitment doesn't answer all of the questions, Michigan fans could not have asked for a better start, as Josh Uche was the first new player added to Michigan's board by the new coordinator, and they were able to reel him in very, very quickly.

When we reported last month that Don Brown was very high on Levi Onwuzurike, the idea was that he is going to focus almost fully on guys who show extreme explosion and can get to the quarterback with ease. Uche fits that bill to a tee, and we see him as an outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid eventually that will be used primarily to get to and hit the quarterback. It's why he was identified, evaluated and offered almost immediately by Brown.

For that reason, Uche is a player whose ranking I would completely ignore as far as him being a middling three-star type player. We've talked about Don Brown getting the keys to a Ferrari after driving (insert solid, dependable sedan) at BC for the last three years, and Uche is the kind of player he would have never had a chance with at any of his last stops. Instead, he's been the catalyst behind a nice pull straight out of SEC country.
