I think Shane Morris is basically never gonna play here. In my eyes, our qbs are Rudock and Gentry with O'Korn and Peters coming next year.

Fox Sports' lead announcing team of Gus Johnson and Joel Klatt also attended(Wednesday's practice with BTN) and, though they had a very brief interaction with Jim Harbaugh, the possibilities were apparent.

"Brady Hoke underachieved to an enormous level with the talent that he had," Klatt said on the Rich Eisen Show today. "When I went yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to see the type of talent that they have, the physicality they have on the offensive line. They need to get better on the defensive line. Their defense last year was seventh in the country in total defense and now you're going to take them and put them in a situation where they're going to see less snaps because the offense moves at a slower tempo. That's going to help their defense improve.

"I don't think nine wins is out of the question. I could see nine wins."

• He explained he had a 38-second conversation with Harbaugh -- more than the BTN crew, which didn't get a sitdown -- and it was limited.• So Klatt praised the offensive line and Harbaugh said, "yeah, try to get better everyday." Klatt told Harbaugh his father was a high school coach and Harbaugh made eye contact, and was impressed with that.

First and foremost, Isaac is taking over! He is now looking like the five star he was coming out of HS. I said in another post he has been difficult to take down once he gets past the line of scrimmage and into the secondary. He catches the ball very well out of the backfield and will run right by and over people. After yesterday's scrimmage, he may be the starter in front of Smith. Harbaugh/Drevno are putting in some old school looks (option, three backs, big sets with multiple TE's creating a mismatch).

Peppers, Peppers, and more Peppers. He is literally playing/learning multiple positions on defense (Safety, Nickel, CB, special teams etc.). Why CB? As I stated earlier, Durkin wants to play press man coverage in the worst way. He wants to be aggressive, but can't due to a lack of play makers and skills on the other corner. Enter Peppers! They trust Hill enough to play the other safety and Lyons can play Nickel when needed.

Finally, the most important battle on the team is at QB. It continues to be Rudock. He is not giving way. He is too consistent. Morris still struggles with some of the basics. It's all about experience and mechanics, of which Rudock continues to be the manager you expected him to be . This is Rudock's job to lose. O'Korn continues to get nothing but praise. He would start immediately if eligible.

I fukking knew Ty Isaac would be a beast.
Where u getting this info from. The reporters I heard is not saying this.

A few bubbles from the submarine | mgoblog

Nothing terribly earth shattering but tonight I worked out with the high school head coach of one of our current players and he shared a few nuggets from a conversation they had over the weekend so I thought I'd share:

1. With Hoke they had a catered chef who basically cooked to order whatever the players wanted and they had as much as they liked. He said it was like eating at a 5 star restaurant every day and it was fantastic. With Harbaugh there are basically no meal choices and if you don't like it - that's too bad

2. The past two years the players stayed in nice, new, air-conditioned rooms where they had a lot of space and personal freedom. With Harbaugh they are crammed into an old, dirty, non-air-conditioned room that's hot as hell. Note: where are they exactly? Sounds like my old dorm room.

3. Under Hoke this player had no clue why he'd play, get pulled, start or be benched. He said there was little communication and he was very confused on what got him playing time or what got him pulled from the game. With Harbaugh he knows exactly where he stands on the depth chart every single day (he said it's updated every day) and he knows exactly what the coaches want to see in him to improve his standing.

That other stuff is the typical hard nosed old school coach stuff, but this third bullet point is so basic, yet so key in a players development it's unreal to me how hoke and his staff got to this point of the coaching ladder and were clueless on communication with players on what was needed from them on field. How do players at that age improve it they aren't told what was needed from them or what their weaknesses are? Just pure asscheeks coaching from hoke and his crew

Open practice reaction thread | mgoblog
not creating a thread for this, because while I trust the source (entry-level athletics department employee) --- I don't trust the sources knowledge of football to that of a coach or someone on the football staff. I used to know folks on the actual staff (Carr days/RR days), so I felt more comfortable saying it was thread worthy...now I just know athletic department people rather than football people. So take it or leave it at your discretion. Make sense?

Anyway...wanted to share what I was told last night.

QB - Everything being reported by "insiders" is true...Morris started camp the best, but it was largely based on knowing what he was doing and chemistry with WRs. Rudock has caught and passed him - extremely bright kid. Now Morris is losing focus and his INTs in practice have gone up as the coaches bring the heat up in practice. Morris HAS gotten better (from last season) - so that's nice.

a. Also noteworthy that there is a worry among some on how Shane will take it if he doesn't win the job. He's always carried a small sense of entitlement around (which doesn't seem farfetched if you know that he and his family requested Shane was the only QB in his class and Borges didn't take one a year later). There is a worry that his game goes to shyt even if he's not THAT far behind Rudock.

b. Some folks think if it's close, it may be better to start Morris and allow him to fail to give him no leg to stand on if Rudock is put in - OR of course if he succeeds, then Michigan has a 2 year starter at QB.

*opinion* While that makes sense, I don't think Harbaugh is the guy to give a shyt about ego. He's going to find the best guy to beat Utah and that's as far as he's thinking. I understand the "win-win" thought process from 1b, but if Rudock is .01% better than Morris, please believe he's going to start. I personally don't think it'll be that close by the time the game rolls around - Morris just turns the ball over too much.

RB - The guys have been told the competition has been extended to the B1G opener --- all 3 or 4 guys will get a shot to win it during games and in practice for the next month or so. The staff doesn't feel ready to pick a guy at this point.

WR - This crew is very '08, I believe it was '08...I was told "they're like the year Greg Mathews was the best WR." They've got guys who can make some plays...but in the end, they're just contributing type players #2 's and #3's. Still too many drops, not enough separation or playmaking. "All very nice guys though..."

TE - Butt is the best receiver on the team. The group as a whole is "as good as they've been since Carr."

OL - "Not getting my hopes up, haven't seen anything unscripted (scrimmages)...but everything I'm hearing is they're above average. 2 years ago D, last year C, this year B."

DL - "Same as the OL...until they go full speed at one another, you never really know. Of course they look the part, but Frank Clark looked the part for 3 years. Losing Mone SUCKS, everyone said he was a starter and most improved (individually) on defense."

LB - "Best unit on the team - Bolden is A LOT better and they have depth." I'm was told that the guys are smart, in position and Durkin's given them more freedom and leadership since they're all older. Told the 2nd unit is better than people think.

DB - Sounds like they are also a solid unit - they miss Countess (or Taylor) though, a steady performer. The positive was on the safeties...I was told they're "by far the most improved unit on the team along with the TEs."

Mainly the conversation was around the QBs, naturally...I found it interesting that there's still a mental concern with Morris. The thought is because he's bought his time and sat behind Gardner that this is now his turn. Nothing sounded like the kid is an a$$hole or cocky, just sounded like he's a nice rich kid who may have a sense of entitlement and may be a little embarrassed if he doesn't win the job. Transfer rumors will swirl, especially once he gets his degree. Local media knows his story and the spotlight and questions will be "unfair."

If it's close, I may almost start Morris and just put him on the short leash. The upside is a 2-year starter and the downside is he's pulled at the end of the 2nd quarter and we all know for sure, he's the #2. I don't think that's how it'll be handled, but I'd hate to lose the kid for a season if he doesn't see him name on the board as the starter vs. Utah. I'd hate to go the other way around and see Rudock struggle in a game and then Morris come in pressing trying to prove everyone he's the starter.

That said, when I said that outloud...my friend said "I'm not sure the coaches care, because #1, they want to win...but almost as importantly...they REALLY like Malzone and he would be a solid #2 option if Rudock stays healthy. Don't want him playing, but you want him getting those reps in practice and mop up duty. He's better than people realize."

practice notes

First couple things I thought were notable:
Harris got a lot of run with the ones. Scored a touchdown on a slant on a fourth down, beating Stribling.

Starting Secondary (Lewis was hurt though) Jabrill, Wilson in a red non contact jersey, Stribling, Clark, and Hill. Hill got a lot of time

Gideon got time with the ones, Bolden, Morgan, Ross, all played with the ones.
Ojemudia was the BUCK, I think I saw RJS there at times too. Marshall was the third stringer.

Glasgow and Henry were on the field most of the time

Starting OL was what has been hashed over

Rudock looked okay. Good mobility, couple errant throws I remember one was behind Butt in the flat. Of course scored two touchdowns though, one to Harris on the slant and one to Butt

Butt, Poggi, Bunting, and Williams a couple times were the TEs that rotated in with the ones. The latter three saw the field with the twos as well

New faq reporting

- Rudock is the starter.....if u want more keep reading

- I got to sit literally on the field on the track part behind the endzone...only first hundred or so to get there could sit there
-Started off with stretches...notable inactives...Jourdan Lewis (dressed but didnt particpate at all) Amara Darboh, Freedy Canteen, Pat Kugler
- Did individual position drills..I was literally two feet from the OL
-They are huge...Drevno taught a lot...Kalis is a monster and got on the young guys when they messed up
-Harbaugh then told us to get loud and pretend we were Utah
-O rotated some but Rudock was the definite 1 and looked fine with a lot of short passes...two for TDs
-Shane sucked with the 2s and almost killed someone when he overthrew Ways and they ran into some students [DeTox note: I like this guy]
-RBs went Smith Isaac Green but they all looked bad...no runs of more than 5 yards but credit the Dline for that maybe
-WRs were Chesson and Drake with Perry in the slot (again Darboh didn't play) Ways got some looks with the 2s. Drake caught a TD pass from Rudock
-TEs mixed a lot but Jake Butt was really good...caught the most balls one for a TD
- OL was as predicted Cole Kalis Glasgow Braden Mags
-Harbaugh coach O Durkin coached the D
- D line roated a lot...Henry Godin Glasgow and Ojemudia started
- LBs rotated too...Bolden Morgan and Ross looked like the 1s
-DBs were Strib and Clark Jabreezy mostly at nickel
-Jabreezy loved to get the D fired up and gave me a look when I yelled at him
-S were Wilson and Hill Lyons played a bit of S and CB with the 1s and 2a
- K were shaky but it looks like Allen then Seychel...both missed a few
....Any more specifics hit me up and sorry for no live tweets but I didn't want my admission revoked

What I Know: Less Than Two Weeks
Just a couple. Also note that things are going to really tighten down beyond Saturday's student attended practice. Those I speak with frequently have been asked to "go dark" until after the Utah game. This isn't just not passing along info, but also not attempting to contact staffers or go to practice. There will always be little things that leak, however, most of the things passed along with be guesses or presumptions. That said, if anyone has access to any information, it's Sam and his crew and The Michigan Insider. I have been told that point blank. These guys have developed great relationships with the program and Sam's name carries a ton of weight. My point is only that you can always trust the information here and that my "guesses and presumptions" statement above doesn't really apply to Sam and the guys here. With the current temperament of the board, I feel it's important to spell some things out so they're not taken the wrong way.

1) With two weeks to go, I've been told the depth chart is more firmed up than anyone has been lead to believe.

2) Rudock will be the starter against Utah. It is not a two quarterback system. Morris will only play if Rudock can't move the offense.

3) Harbaugh places a TON of responsibility on his QBs. The OL, RB, WR, etc. won't be blamed if the offense struggles -- the QB will.

4) Deveon Smith will be the RB. Isaac and Green will get touches, but the starting spot is solidly Smith's.

5) OPINION: From what I understand, it will NOT be running back by committee. It's Smith's job and as long as he's gaining yards, the others will play situationally or to give him a breather.

6) Best player thus far on defense: Delano Hill

7) Best player thus far on offense: Kyle Kalis (surprise!)

8) Offense has timing elements that are foreign to Michigan players and Rudock. Hope is to help Rudock's rhythm and open the running game. Rudock reads these far better than Morris, however, Morris has the better arm for slants, outs, and pop passes.

9) The offense will take some time. They're sloppy and far behind the defense. I wouldn't look for any quick strike or efficient series early on.

10) The defense is solid and generates pressure. Willie Henry has been good, as has Taco. The linebackers will be the key (but that's not new).

11) Reviewing film, there is confidence that Michigan wins most of the matchups against the Utah offense.

12) Reviewing film, there is confidence that the timing plays will significantly soften the Utah defense and remove their LBs from their frequent blitz schemes.
