Don Brown - Michigan Defensive Coordinator

It was said that Jim Harbaugh wanted to go more towards a 3-4 Defense, and what he got was a guy that runs a similar 4-3/3-4 look that his former defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin incorporated (albeit, he leans on his 3-4 a bit more heavily, in my opinion). If that's what he wanted, he got his man. He also got a man that began his coaching in the Ivy league at Dartmouth and even was the head coach (posting a 26-10 record) as the Yale Baseball coach, where he was also the defensive coordinator. Yes, he sounds like a Jim Harbaugh guy.

Since then, he's been the defensive coordinator at Brown, UMass, Maryland, UConn, and Boston College. He's also held head coaching positions at Plymouth State, Northeastern, and UMass. But that's enough of his wikipedia page, let's take a closer look at that sweet, sweet mustache and what he brings to the table football-wise.

Philosophy
Don Brown is a multiple front coach, but his philosophy is an attacking one-gap system. He wants to
  1. Attack the LOS and disrupt blocking schemes
  2. Get off the ball and stay on the edge of a blocker
  3. Stop the run on the way to the QB
  4. Rush the passer on run downs
Those are the essentials of his defense. The rest is details, which is what I hope to get to.

Principles
In studying Wisconsin Defensive Coordinator Dave Aranda, I have been lucky enough to come across Don Brown's defense and study and watch it quite a bit over the last few years. Don Brown is a 3-4 guy at heart, but his one-gap philosophy extends across formations, and he'll put his WILL (formerly known as Buck or WDE) with his hand in the dirt and run 4-3 Under, 4-3 Over, and Bear fronts as well.

I've previously discussed a one-gap 3-4 defense in more detail before, and that's the essence of what Brown is trying to do. He'll run an Okie front

He'll run a 3-4 Over (4-3 Under) front that he calls Eagle (typically a 2-high safety defense) to stop primarily Iso, Power, or Option teams with the WILL (Jack in the diagram below) almost always coming off the edge.

He'll pull out what looks like a 4-3 Over that he calls a "Hawk" defense, which sees the "Dog Safety" (DS, aka strong safety) have support responsibility on the edge is what is mostly a Cover 3 defense.

He has a "Spark" defense which is actually the Eagle defense, with a DL over the Nose and one outside shade on both OGs. He can then call "Spin" and put the DS in the deep middle of the field and play man free. He tends to like this defense against 12 personnel and 20 personnel teams.

And of course, he also has the Bear defense, which is similar to the Eagle front but walks the MIKE down right over the inside shoulder of the TE and puts the DS at the LB level. This typically utilizes man free coverage behind it as well.

They will also run a true 4-3 Over and 4-3 Under defense.

Here's what it looks like all put together

In the end, he prefers a single high safety look, and prefers to primarily play man-free. However, even his zones rely much more heavily on man principles than most zone defenses. His cover 3 is a tight cover 3, similar to what Durkin ran at Michigan. His two-high safety look is typically a cover 4 scheme (which differs from the man-under scheme preferred by his predecessor) that can mix press man and zone responsibilities.

Moving Parts
The thing that most immediately comes to mind with Brown's defense are all the moving parts. This is not a static "get lined up" defense. This defense has constant moving parts. And with those moving parts comes a wide variety of blitzes from any defender on the field. If you watched the previous video, you say CB blitzes from both the field and the boundary. You saw DS blitzes, LB blitzes, twists, stunts, and everything else that could be thrown at the offense. Brown uses moving pieces and entropy to confuse blocking schemes and get free hitters at the point of attack. By giving assignments, such as blitz assignments, he asks his guys to play faster. Be first to the point of attack and you'll win more often than not (the problem comes when you can't get to the point of attack first or when you flat out get beat, leaving others in tougher spots defensively).

At the height of this, on passing downs, is the zone blitz, in which Brown will use almost every chance he gets.

Pass Rush
When I talked about all the moving pieces and attacking defense, I also hinted at the weakness of the defense. The pass rush must work as a smart, cohesive unit in order to succeed. The outside guys can't get deeper than the deepest (or else a huge lane will open between them and the inside guys); the inside guys must push the pocket. The bubble must be protected; a rush lane through the bubble (pocket) and the defense quickly pops.

Defending the Spread
After Michigan got gashed by Indiana, fans worried they would struggle defending the spread. After the game against the Buckeyes, Wolverine fans were certain they could not. Brown has realized this concern even before he was ever a candidate for the Michigan DC job.

In order to defend the spread, Brown tends to move away from his one-high safety looks and move to more of a two-high look out of cover 4. He does this so that he can rotate safeties into run support, either to defend the crease (outside the Tackle/TE, inside #2) or the alley (outside #2, inside #1). He will occasionally use a single-high look and give crease/alley responsibility to the deep safety. His deep safety isn't nearly as deep as Durkin's; this puts even heavier responsibility on the CBs to succeed, as many times the receivers can get over top of the defense without great support over the top. The box is primarily responsible for the run (along with the safeties), while the CBs and in some cases the safeties look almost completely to the pass before helping out in support.

Linebacker Coaching
While Brown came up as a DB coach, and BC he was a LB coach as well. I won't go too much into depth here, but here's video of BC working on drills and fundamentals under his watch.

Etc.

Notes
Delance: I am getting closer to putting in a 247Sports Crystal Ball to Michigan for 2016 Top100 offensive tackle Jean Delance. Things continue to be trending Michigan's way here.

One person close to Delance's recruitment that I spoke with referred to one of the major differences between Michigan and the others remaining on his list is that Michigan has a much higher level of stability than LSU or Texas does, making it more difficult to invest four/five years of one's future into a situation that could potentially change drastically within the next 12 to 18 months. The Joe Wickline firing didn't help as he had built a great relationship with the former Texas OL coach.

This is another one of those "persistence" recruitments on Michigan's end; as Steve Wiltfong and I have both pointed out for months, Michigan views Delance as a Rashan Gary-level target for them to finish off their offensive line class.

Gary: My 247Sports Crystal Ball on #1 overall prospect Rashan Gary is not going anywhere and will stay on Michigan for the foreseeable future, after a routine check-in on how his recruitment is trending.

There are reports that Ole Miss is starting to make a run, and it's possible that they could be positioning themselves as the team to make a run at the Wolverines. Most of these reports revolve around a friendship between Gary and five-star offensive tackle Greg Little, who recently committed to the Rebels and will be recruiting Gary to join him in Oxford at the Under Armour game next month.

Michigan has been down this road with elite level prospects in the past (Laquon Treadwell), and there are never any guarantees when Ole Miss gets involved. However, there are stronger connections for Gary with the Michigan program, Partridge notwithstanding, and Ole Miss doesn't offer an academic package that even approaches Michigan's, and the Rebels would have to overcome what turned into a mediocre official visit during the fall.

Again, we (Michigan and recruiting writers) have been down this road before, but as of December 23, 2015, it looks as if the real battle regarding Gary's recruitment will be who finishes in second. Michigan has simply done a better job than anyone throughout.

Brown hiring: It's not really news to report that Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown has started to reach out to the top targets remaining on the Wolverines' defensive board, because that's his job.

What's worth watching is what direction Michigan will go at some different positions if they miss on some of their top defensive targets. Brown IS the primary recruiter for Miami (FL) Columbus three-star defensive end Joshua Uche, and I'm told they are going to try to get him on campus after the dead period.

What will Brown be looking for? I got some insight on that after talking to someone who knows what he looks for in prospects.

"Whoever can create chaos," they said. "Pass-rushers are where he builds his defense, and he'll go with a raw, explosive player over a more refined one that may have possess the athleticism to eventually become a game-changer at the end spot."

I don't think his philosophy is going to change their approach as to how they'll finish up in 2016, as their board is pretty much set at this point. However, it will be something to remember in 2017 once they start to evaluate and offer new prospects.

Commit stuff: Did some extra digging earlier in the week, and while the coaching staff feels good about their current verbal commitments, two players they are especially excited to start working with are four-star DE/LB Carlo Kemp and four-star offensive tackle Devery Hamilton.

Kemp, who has signed his financial aid papers and will enroll in Ann Arbor in a couple weeks, is someone that Michigan pushed for very hard late in his process to beat Notre Dame for his services. Kemp had a solid offer sheet, but one that those around the Michigan program thought should have been even bigger. They believe he can become an elite pass-rusher in any (Don Brown) defense and could be one of the higher impact signees in the class.

With Hamilton, we've discussed his high ceiling a few times before, but he looks to be a player who is just starting to touch the surface of his abilities. He's one of those undersized, athletic high school prospects that has the frame to bulk up fast but has the quick twitch ability to keep those attributes at a high level even after gaining a lot of weight.

Much like Kemp, Hamilton's offer sheet was strong but he didn't have the 30 or 40 offers that some elite prospects get. His commitment to Michigan over Stanford was one the staff views as a huge, huge win on the trail.

Mattison: As we reported last week, Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison has a legitimate chance to end the season as the National Recruiter of the Year according to 247Sports, as he's the primary recruiter for a handful of Michigan's remaining targets.

Despite being the oldest member of the staff, one source recently told us that he's working harder than ever to put together the best possible class.

"Mattison is an absolute grinder," they said. "He's an old-school recruiter. He probably outworks anybody on the staff right now, and it's paying dividends in a couple of these recruitments. It's no surprise that he's in striking distance of the top recruiter because he's recruited that way this entire cycle."

Rashan Gary, Levi Onwuzurike, Dontavious Jackson and Keyshon Camp (still recruiting, remains a near no-shot) are among the guys he is still honing in on late in the process. Mattison is currently ranked 4th in the country.

TE stuff: The main three targets Michigan continues to pursue at tight end are Isaac Nauta, Jacob Mathis and Chase Allen.

Michigan continues to chip away at the five-star Nauta, but it would remain a surprise if he committed anywhere but Georgia. This may be one of those disappointments where the Wolverines finish second for an elite recruit.

Despite offers from Florida State and Missouri, Michigan believes they are the lead school for Allen, as the two schools mentioned piggy-backed the Wolverines' offer and it's our belief that Allen realized this. The Michigan staff sees them as a better fit for him than either of those schools anyways, as he's a true elite student that is capable of a potential engineering workload while playing for the football team.

Mathis is where it gets interesting. Michigan may be trending back up here after an original belief that the four-star may prefer to stay down south. After digging on it this week, that belief was rooted in the idea that he could commit to Florida. Ironically, as we reported in the same piece that said Mathis would prefer to stay down south, we reported that he was not a take for Florida as the Gators feel good about Nick Eubanks. It appears that Mathis may have gotten that message somehow, as Michigan once again believes they are right in the thick of it for the Tampa (FL) Berkeley Prep star.

Right now, I believe Mathis and Allen are on equal footing. I don't believe they would say no if Allen wanted in first despite the fact they've recruited Mathis longer.

Bits
- As our Oregon affiliate reported last week, it appears that Dylan Crawford is no longer an option for the Ducks. The only way that door would open back up is if Darren Carrington declares for the NFL Draft, and even then the Ducks would likely wait to see what Javon McKinley does. Michigan looks great here going forward.

- A couple Ohio State Crystal Balls have come in for Top150 wide receiver Donnie Corley, who has been a reported Michigan State lean for months. We do not believe Michigan is any kind of factor in this race at this point, despite interviews stating Michigan is in a top five.

- By that same token, I'm back believing the Wolverines have a commanding lead for Detroit (MI) King Top100 cornerback Lavert Hill. Again, this has been somewhat of an up and down recruitment, but Michigan has been the constant.

- The departure of Mark Richt and also of running backs coach Thomas Brown are likely to re-open options for 2017 five-star running back Anthony McFarland, who was heavily favoring Georgia early in the process. Michigan is one school that could eventually capitalize, as the Wolverines were in an early top three.

- Not expecting much to come of it, but 2017 Top100 offensive tackle Andrew Thomas listed Michigan among a group of eight schools he's heavily considering to recruiting guru Tom Lemming. Michigan has remained in relative contact with Thomas.

Ole Miss:pacspit:stay the fukk away from Gary.

It appears that a pair of Rose Bowl rivals are going to go head-to-head for two of each school's top remaining targets in the 2016 class, as Michigan and Washington may be separating themselves for a couple elite talents.

All Crystal Ball Predictions

It's almost certain to be the Huskies or the Wolverines for Top100 cornerback David Long, and this isn't news according to anyone who has followed the recent Stanford decommitment's recruitment over the last three months.

Sources on both ends are actually relatively confident in each other's chances with Long at this point. I have refused to put in a 247Sports Crystal Ball in this one because it remains a close race, and Long is saying positive things to both coaching staffs. I think this may be a situation where he's truly torn. The major disadvantage for Michigan in this one is that he has yet to take his official visit to Seattle, a trip that will take place after the dead period has concluded.

All Crystal Ball Predictions

The interesting news comes with word that it's likely to be Michigan or Washington for Allen (TX) four-star defensive end Levi Onwuzurike. My opinion is that Onwuzurike has always been relatively underrated, and the fact that two staffs that fielded top five defenses last year would love to add him to the fold is a good indication that it may be the case.

The Allen (TX) product has a top four of Arizona State, Baylor, Michigan and Washington. We've been told that Onwuzurike's parents are playing a role in his recruitment and would prefer him to go to a school that has strong academics. This is one reason we've been told that Arizona State may not be major contenders. With Baylor, you're looking at a program that has struggled to make a dent at the Dallas-area powerhouse. Reasons for that remain unknown, but it's given Baylor sources some uneasiness about how this one may end.

This appears to be another 50/50-ish battle. Those we've talked to do not believe he is favoring either program, and won't fully write off any of his final four schools. Onwuzurike has already taken his official visit to both programs

If there was any doubt that Allen (TX) four-star defensive end Levi Onwuzurike's status on Michigan's board would change with the hiring of Don Brown, you can forget it. In fact, after talking to a couple people close to his recruitment, he may have even jumped higher on their overall board, as we're told that Brown is heavily enamored with Onwuzurike's abilities as a potential pass-rusher in Michigan's defense.

Washington holds both 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for Onwuzurike right now, but he could easily end up a Wolverine as well. There hasn't been enough concrete information to go off of on his recruitment at this point, but it does appear to be between the Huskies and the Wolverines, with Baylor holding an outside shot as well.

Today our Oregon insider Justin Hopkins and 247Sports National Insider Ryan Bartow both made 247Sports Crystal Ball forecasts in favor of the Wolverines for Crawford.

I put in a forecast for Michigan back in October.

Sounds like the Ducks may not be full at WR with McDoom committing before the holiday.

ORLANDO, FL ---- Michigan's highest rated commitment, Hartland (WI) Arrowhead four-star offensive tackle Ben Bredeson, comes from a smaller state in Wisconsin and says that he's looking to prove his worth this week at the Under Armour All-American game. The event is particularly strong in defensive linemen, giving Bredeson ample opportunity to show that he's worth the ranking he's been given.

"I don't know if I'd call it a chip on my shoulder," he told Lions247 analyst Sean Fitz. "I'm looking to see how I can rank up to them though on a national scale. I am going to stay at tackle but it will depend on where the coaches put me. I'm looking to go up against some of these great defensive lineman that everyone keeps talking about, with Rashan Gary being one of them. You hear about him a lot as far as being the best player in the country and it will be a great measuring stick for me."

Besides trying to get better by matching up with Gary, Bredeson will be working to make Michigan's recruiting class better by working on Gary to become a part of it. The Wolverines have been favored in the #1 overall's recruitment for some time, and Bredeson is going to do his part to help the coaching staff finish.

"I'm just going to talk to him about how Michigan has turned things around," Bredeson noted. "Our program is on the way up with Jim Harbaugh and if we can get players like him, the sky is going to be the limit for us. It's a little dfiferent putting my recruiting hat on. I'd like to think I've helped us with a few guys. I look forward to talking to some guys that we want and just tell them about why I chose to do what I did. It's nothing about putting some pressure on them; it's about telling them why Michigan is the best choice and letting them make their own conclusion."

Offensive lineman target Jean Delance, linebacker target Dontavious Jackson and tight end target Jacob Mathis are among those that Bredeson will be looking to help add to the fold for the Wolverines besides Gary, and his pitch right now is pretty simple.

"There's a lot of momentum being built at Michigan under Coach Harbaugh," he noted. "With the changing of the guard, there's a different mindset with the players over there about finishing and playing well. I'm really looking forward to getting up there and becoming part of it."

Bredeson is currently ranked 35th overall according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, and he's the top player in the state of Wisconsin this cycle. The four-star chose Michigan over Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Ohio State among others.
