Wanted to give everyone an idea of the mindset on the recruiting trail following yesterday's loss.....
1. One loss never makes a difference in recruiting. Fans are tired of losing to Ohio State, and tired of losing to them in the fashion they lost to them yesterday. However, from a recruit's perspective, they are focused on the future, and most (if not all) see Michigan's 9-3 record as a strong sign that they are going to turn things around in Ann Arbor sooner rather than later. The adage I always take regarding losses and recruiting is simple: if one loss changes a player's mind on Michigan (or any other school), they weren't that interested to begin with.
2. I talked to an excellent source about the overall atmosphere post-game and whether or not it would affect them with some of the top targets on campus. Their response should calm some nerves.
"Not at all," they said. "In fact, it's just about the opposite. The elite kids see a talent deficiency at some positions with a chance to play early. Ohio State exploited those areas."
The strong consensus is that Michigan isn't in any less of a standing with any of the visitors than they were heading into the weekend, and they improved their spot with most prospects. This isn't necessarily a surprise, despite the outcome of the game. I think most view it like Ambry Thomas did in his reaction yesterday, which is to not put a lot of stock into one loss if you're not even a player on the field.
3. We expected Pie Young to commit this weekend. He did not. Clint and I wondered aloud and it's worth noting that Young may be waiting to see who Miami (FL) hires to be their next coach. Given he is not a take right now for any of his other finalists, there wasn't much stopping him from pledging this weekend (Miami isn't listed as a finalist, but he's watching them). We'll see what happens; we still feel great about him eventually committing as of now.
