Michigan's recruitment of four-star BUCK linebacker target Carlo Kemp revolved around one simple measurement: six feet, four inches.
The coaching staff liked Kemp on film (a lot) early on during evaluations, but basically waited to offer him until Greg Mattison (his primary recruiter) got out to Boulder to see him in person and get live measurements of his height. Once they got the 6'4" number, Kemp immediately moved up their board at the BUCK spot for a combination of tenacity, ability and the length/size combo the coaches were recruiting at the spot.
Was Kemp the top target at the position? Not the tippy top to begin with, as Xavier Kelly and Jeffrey McCulloch were higher on the staff's original board. However, Kemp's wild card is his pedigree, as the Pagano family is very much a football family like the Harbaugh clan, and that's something the coaching staff liked about his potential abilities in Ann Arbor as well.
An assist in this commitment also goes to offensive lineman commitment Ben Bredeson, another prospect who chose Michigan over Notre Dame. The two maintained consistent contact for months after the original BBQ at the Big House visit and from what I'm told talked about the differences between the two programs, as Kemp wondered why he chose the Wolverines over the Irish. Recruits recruiting recruits is never really the primary reason any prospect chooses any one program, but it was a unique situation
Kemp is a dynamic personality and an incredibly friendly kid. Not that the coaching staff needs much assistance, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him work on some recruiting targets going forward.
I'm not 100% sure Michigan is done at the BUCK position if they can woo McCulloch during his official visit for the Ohio State game.
