Following a strong official visit to Ann Arbor this weekend, Michigan is now the leader for Franklin (CA) Elk Grove 2016 Top100 athlete Lamar Jackson.
"Yeah, I'd say Michigan leads," he said. "The Michigan experience kind of spoke for itself. The atmosphere at the game was incredible, the academics at Michigan are great and I learned a lot about the program, the players and the leadership of Coach Harbaugh was really impressive to me. I wasn't sure heading into the visit because it's a long ways away and I was not familiar with the weather, but the visit definitely changed my mind on things."
One random encounter that may have opened Jackson's eyes to what a Michigan degree can do off the field was his talk with Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and former Wolverine Jamar Adams, who now works for Ross in New York City.
"It was crazy to shake Mr. Ross's hand and think about how this is a guy who donated $350 million to the school," he said. "He's the owner of a NFL team. I talked a lot with Jamar Adams too. He talked about how he played in the league for a few years and after he was done he wasn't sure what he wanted to do, so he came back to Michigan and talked to Shari (Acho), who helps the athletes with their futures and academics. She got him in touch with Mr. Ross and now he works for him in New York. That said a lot to me about the value of a Michigan degree and the type of networking they have."
The game on the field was able to showcase Michigan's defense, which featured a lot of one-on-one situations for their cornerbacks, a position Jackson has been talked to about playing for the Wolverines. He was impressed with what he saw.
"If you're playing corner, that's what you want," he said. "You want to get the opportunity to showcase your skills against receivers consistently and I think my size and speed would give me that chance in the Michigan defense. Coach Durkin said they want guys that can lock up receivers one-on-one and he said I am the kind of guy they are targeting for something like that."
Jackson's current plan is to announce his college decision at the Under Armour All-American game in January. Utah, Arizona and Arizona State have already received official visits, and Jackson is unsure of where he will take his fifth one. USC is the current 247Sports Crystal Ball leader, but he has no current plans to unofficially visit the hometown team this season. Jackson is ranked 95th overall according to the 247Sports Composite.
