imagin turning that down in pandemic lol..
just cause he didn't wanna read ads in between takes
:mjlol:

it wasn't the ads (or at least i dont believe it was). joe saw the bags rogan and the ringer got, and wanted a deal on that level. on his terms. basically, his ego did him in.

he doesn't have rogan's audience, and he doesn't have the same day one scale a network like the ringer brings to the table. that's why he's launching new podcasts now: the JBN, if it works and if he can keep the numbers for the JBP up, is what he comes back to the table with when it's time to negotiate the next big deal.

the problem is, those networks take years and years to build into a successful model. and it's still not an exact science, because the business of podcasting is still so new. that's why companies like barstool and spotify are buying podcasts to begin with.

imo (for as little as it's worth) joe should have tucked his ego in and taken the spotify deal. i would even argue he could have taken it for a little less money, in exchange for a shorter renewal window and an operating budget to launch his own network. then recruited whatever names he could on spotify's dime (aka, go get akademics and some of these other youngins doing their thing) and built his infrastructure with a machine behind him. then went after joe rogan money.

he probably wouldn't have been able to get sole ownership of the network. but those are the tradeoffs when you need a machine behind you. it's why bill simmons had to build grantland before he built the ringer. :yeshrug:

instead he's got the JBP, one solid podcast embroiled in controversy, and another that's... ehhhhhhh.
