It's the argument I've had for years stretching back to my military experience with dudes from NY. Us dudes from Texas and other places in the south wasn't fukking with Nas and Wu Tang like that and they'd swear it was because we were to " slow" to get it. I'd always quote "The late great Pimp-C" "it gets no play down in Texas that shyt don't bump in da trunk". But on the real Joe and Ish remind me of them dudes cause we all in the same age range, early to mid 40s. They can't comprehend that we wasn't checking for they local regional ass legends. Most of the south from GA to TX fukked with the west coast back then. K104 in Dallas would only play the big singles by NY rappers but other than that we had are own thing
yep...im from Oak Cliff...Mr. Pookie and Mr. Lucci got more airplay then some platinum nikkas from other coasts.
i remember only knowing certain beats because Swisha House or DSR freestyled on them shyts
The world know the All N My Grill beat for Missy Eliott but if it come on down here nikkas gone say "Drank up in my cup, man holup...."
real shyt tho, we need more viable outlets and coverage that support the south with the same regard other regions receive....and it gotta be people that fukk the real south...not a nikka that's gone play Dont Want Drama or talk about Diddy & Jayz when UGK and Ball N G get brought up.
We need a Source or Hot97 or JBP equivalent because so much music that comes from here is held in high regard but not by people that make it to media. I got all this southern hip hop knowledge and appreciation just rotting in my brain. I need to start a channel or something.
