The United Nations Security Council on Monday passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza for the month of Ramadan, breaking a five-month impasse during which the U.S. vetoed several calls for ending the war, even as the humanitarian toll climbed higher.

The resolution passed with 14 votes in favor. The U.S. abstained, allowing the resolution to pass. The chamber broke into applause after the vote.

The breakthrough resolution, which is legally binding and was put forth by the 10 nonpermanent members of the Council, was negotiated intensely until the last minute. The U.S. asked for a change in the text that removed “permanent cease-fire” and replaced it with “lasting cease-fire,” according to diplomats, language that would leave room for Israel to defend itself and called for both sides to create conditions where the halt in fighting could be sustained.

The UN reports say the same. You just don’t care. It shows.
The two obvious issues are:

  1. The NYT has repeatedly published incorrect information regarding sexual violence on October 7, 2023 - particularly early on when they published outright lies.
  2. Large chunks of the UN's report regarding sexual violence of any kind are still based on Israeli sources that have demonstrably made up information.
  3. While this doesn't invalidate the possibility of her telling the truth and being raped - it does illustrate how much the older press has become a mouthpiece for government instead of doing extensive reporting.
  4. The lopsided reporting is remarkably worrying - the NYT has published virtually nothing regarding the confirmed sexual violence committed by the IDF - while they have done an immense amount of coverage over claims of sexual violence against Israelis; if you don't understand why one is being highlighted over the other - you may not have enough media literacy to be able to parse through the ethnic cleansing campaign at all.

Correction: the UN wants to investigate the rape claims according to Gutierrez. Israel has not allowed anyone from the outside to investigate.

Personally, I believe EVERY rapist should be executed. Whether that's in Israel or in the US following due process. That is one of the most vile acts anyone can commit.

I don't however, blindly believe everything Israel has to say. The western media has been painting Hamas out as sexual predators who "systematically used rape", with NO corroborating evidence. You are free to believe bullshyt like 40 babies were beheaded, if you want.

speaking of media literacy, it looks i need to bring this article back...

The Luntz-tested presentations on the war in Gaza urge politicians to avoid trumpeting America’s supposedly shared democratic values with Israel, and focus instead on deploying “The Language of War with Hamas.” According to this framing, they must deploy incendiary language painting Hamas as a “brutal and savage…organization of hate” which has “raped women,” while insisting Israel is engaged in “a war for humanity.”

In one focus group, Luntz asked participants to state which alleged act by Hamas on October 7 “bothers you more.” After being presented with a laundry list of alleged atrocities, a majority declared that they were most upset by the claim that Hamas “raped civilians” – 19 percent more than those who expressed outrage that Hamas supposedly “exterminated civilians.”

Data like this apparently influenced the Israeli government to launch an obsessive but still unsuccessful campaign to prove that Hamas carried out sexual assault on a systematic basis on October 7.
