I can remember dude playing a few games at Winston Lake.Man!!!! This is fukking major!!!
CP3 is that nicca and AggiePride!
So proud of my little homie
I can remember dude playing a few games at Winston Lake.
His cousin married into my family. My grandma is in a wheelchair, and told me how he came to the wedding. My grandma blunt, so she told him he’s family, and whenever she sees him he needs to help her out with pushing her around. She got him to push her into the elevator and stroll her to her seat lol.
But yea, this major. We really becoming a powerhouse, not only in HBCU world but within universities as a whole.
and Aggie Pride!
What's up family!@Theolodius_Black what's good I went to a small private HS so we didn't have a band but music is in my blood...I had no idea how lit swac bands was until youtube put me on...I grew up going to jcsu games and loved their band but it's nothing like what yall got going on down there in MS/LA ...
a few questions...........
how did you get an audition and how high was the demand to make this band?
was your HS band lit as well?
who was your band director?
how did yall decide on selection arrangements? seems like the students have a huge input because I now keep up with whats current based on what boom and juke is playing
did yall have a good rapport with any other bands?
do you do summer bands? I just started following MAAB and NOASB
precaite your response bro frfr...wow Dr. Little was actually your DM I'm a huge fan of his...The band directors seem so serious and millitant at JSU was it intimidating performing for them? Like when im watching yall in the stands the staff be sitting there with this stern posture even the jsette sponsor is not there for any games lol...You know Travist too! seems like he's a rising star I just found out he was at whitehaven from that craigmont vs whitehaven battle that recently hit youtube...What's up family!
So basically my high school was semi corp meaning we did Corp style in the field but cranked up in the stands because our head band director and his assistant were both black so we got to have fun. Our band was 50/50 white and black though but our white kids knew how to crank
I got my audition because my high school directors knew the directors at Jackson state because brookhaven and Jackson ain't far apart. I auditioned with alcorn first but honestly, that was just practice for the Boom
It was a lot of people trying out at different times mostly during what's referred to as "concert season ". My audition was easy because i kinda had a reputation for being pretty good (high school was all superior, usually made first chair or top 3 at clinics, got lions band callback) so i didn't have to do much to earn my spot.
Dr. Liddell was the head band director when i came through and the current director, Dr. Little, was actually one of our drum majors.
At any given time there's about 4-6 people arranging music for the Boom, not including music majors. We get heavy input on what we play by basically just requesting it. A requested song gets written, passed out, played through 3 times and if we like it, it stays. Usually on the 3rd playthrough, sections figure out what they wanna do with it as far as taking stuff up, screaming, etc.
We have great rapport with other bands. It's fiercely competitive but it's all love. Classiest band program ive ever sat across from was Tennessee state. They met us at our buses after the game, told us how fun it was and we chopped it up. They live up to that name, those are good people. @staticshock is hornet and Alabama state got plenty of cool people in their band as well. We all love the shyt we do and being music heads talking shyt and cracking jokes and having fun is apart of the culture.
I don't follow summer bands much anymore but one of the guys i was cool with in WT is over the Mississippi all star band, Travist. Them summer bands mean bro

@staticshock do you know who wrote 'take me down' for ASU?....that arrangement is genius to me ...are you impressed with that arrangement at all? what about 'caramel'? that goes hard to me as well
300 deep? I got plans of coming to one of yall home games since thats the closest swac school to me and it's right off 85....was coming this pass season but unforseen circumstances wouldn't allow me to come...what is everybody beef with Dr. O? seems like a cool guy but they hate him in the youtube comments ...I discover a new ASU banger almost every week when I do my back history on this band it's crazy! I got yall at #1 when it comes to indoors and march in/out cadences but I need yall to get back to top tier in the footbal stands... Let me know what you got in the works anything hbcu bands Im IN!I can answer some of those questions..
I auditioned for 3 different colleges. Albany State, Fort Valley & Alabama State. I was originally a music major, and I chose Bama State cause I was in a small band in HS and was tired of that shyt and wanted to be in a big band in the SWAC. We were 300 deep my crab year in 06
my high school band was aight. I was apart of the band when we transitioned from corps style to traditional. We were corp style my 9th grade year, but we switch after that cause the demographics of the school and county changed overnight. I think it was like 70% black a couple years before I got there, but once I graduated we were like 94% black, the rest were Hispanic. White folk got the hell from out the area in a hurry
My director was Dr.Oliver & he’s still there. Hopefully some changes will be made soon. And yea we had input on what was played. We had a few music majors in the band and they arranged songs, plus every dance routine we did was completely designed by the students.
We’re cool with members of other bands because some of us went to high school with them, and there are band frats across HBCU bands. Z Phi Z is the “national frat” for HBCU cymbal sections. Red Dawg Is the national frat for people from Georgia in different college bands (wish I joined). N Phi O is the national frat for folks from New Orleans. There are more but those are the ones of the top of my head
like the breh @Theolodius_Black said, we talk more shyt to each other than the football teams, but in the end it’s all love. During the games and parade season your only goal is to embarrass the other band, but after that we can kick it and take pics with each other and it’s all love
I think I’m going to do GA Mass band this summer. I helped out with the band at the elementary School I work at and the high school band that we feed into, and I got that itch again. These last 6-7 months of school have been the most I’ve played my horn in the last ten years since I left college
nice to see some more band heads on here.
I have something in the works for folks who love HBCU bands, hopefully I can get it off the ground this year
