This match was funny to me because all of the English media narratives at the time were extinguished.
“Is this United team the best team of all time?” Nope
“United is way too big and physical for the small Spaniards.” Nope
“The premier league has the best players in the world.” Nope

The way the Chelsea played in the 2nd leg semi final, they thought United would do the same thing but better.

Nah, that tweet is right.

Barcelona success only came with Cruyff and his disciples. They are historically a disastrous club. Then Rinus Michaels and Cruyff arrive in the 70s and they dominate Spain. Cruyff returns to manage in the late 80s and they finally win a European cup. Then Rijkaard—and Ajax boy—arrives and they have brief success. Finally Pep takes over and they are top of the world until 2013. They won CL in 2015, but that looks more and more like an aberration, and it wasn’t a Cruyff influenced side.

Cruyff is probably the most important personality in European football history.

Maybe Koeman brings that back? Nah, who am I kidding, dude is a joke manager.

Barca and Real Madrid were close until the start of the 60's and then Real pulled away. Argument can be made that while Real were the best team in Europe, Barca were the best team in Spain in the late 50's. Real had the support of General Franco, who did a Drake. Franco was initially a Atletico fan, but as Real were winning and he hopped onto the wave. :mjpls: Barca still managed to win 3 Fairs/Uefa/Europa Cups by the mid 60's to Real's 6 European Cups. While the European Cup has always been the king, the Fairs/Uefa Cup and Cup Winners Cup had a lot more respect to their names, compared to now. Probably because European Club Competition was only a decade old.

Between the years Cruyff left as a player to when he was returned as coach. Barca were more of a cup team with 1 La Liga title win in that time frame.

A good Barca/Real Madrid comparison is Liverpool/United. Just United's branding was better even in the early 90's. United were calling themselves the biggest club in the World back then and they hadn't even won a league in over 20 years.
