you are using that which cannot easily analysed (the game in general) to support your point.

just consider basic skills. when the ball is not in motion.

there is no player in the entire 2022 world cup who can strike a dead ball like zico, socrates and 'em.

see no BS "we cannot compare eras" to muddy the waters.

not one player in this world cup in going to put a free kick in the corner like they used to do all of the time.

phil jones can hardly control a ball, cannot pass, cross and has poor timing so no he fails the test.

meanwhile (socrates) could do all of that in games and out of games with dead balls.

so stop it
England didn't bring James Ward-Prowse so you might be right.

Personally I don’t put too much weight on winning a World Cup. What if Messi or Ronaldo were from Belarus? We gonna judge them for not winning a WC then?

Personally squad wise Portugal and Argentina just not been good enough for the past 15 years. It’s tournament football so you can still pull off the win and as someone mentioned if Higauin didn’t bottle his chances, Messi has a WC medal right now. But fundamentally it’s a team sport and no matter how good you are there’s 10 other players with you. If they ain’t good enough to make the right passes with you, or score the goals from your assists, what can you do. It’s a myth Maradona dragged Argentina to a WC. The team was lot stronger than anything Ronaldo or Messi have had.

Like yesterday. Half the Argentina team seem to barely be able to make basic passes

My point is what’s the threshold? Is it Argentina and Portugal? Which for past 30 years squad wise been B tier? Or is it C tier for the GOAT to win one I.e Croatia. Or is it D tier where we’re expecting a GOAT to win the WC with

If Messi was Spanish he’d have 1 maybe 2 WCs. Because he’d have the players around him to help Spain perhaps even win 2014 WC too. Wouldn’t change my perception. Messi legacy solidified over the course of 15 seasons in elite competitions
