This is a huge deal for not only DMV but for Richmond, VA and that I-95 corridor too. It effectively turns Richmond and anyplace north of it into a rail accessible, but far flung, suburb of DC.
There are people that do drive or take rail, but on a good day it's about a 2 hour ordeal on the 110 mile distance to DC from Richmond, that's without rush hour traffic.
I'm not sure if it says in this particular article, but since Virginia purchased 225 miles of CSX freight rail, I've read where they said it will only take 1 hour to get from Richmond to DC with rail routes they purchased and will add passenger rail. So this rail bridge across the Potomac seals the deal.

- What that means for Richmond is a lot more people will be taking their DC area salaries and purchasing less expensive housing/property out there.
- Also just brings Richmond into the DC sphere more.
