Why are they pushing this Nnedi Okorafor chick as the only black female writer allowed to write black female characters? Her comic work is TERRIBLE and Shuri's long awaited solo return after 10 years is going to be wasted bc Marvel thinks finding one and only one black female writer, regardless of talent, and throwing her on every book with a black female, is somehow how you cultivate your industry

Trading Nnedi for Erika would be like trading Michael Olowokandi for Hakeem Olajuwon. MAJOR come up

By the description/solicitation, they've already done so

“Shuri is happiest in a lab, surrounded by gadgets of her own creation. She’d rather be testing gauntlets than throwing them. But a nation without a leader is a vulnerable one — and Shuri may have to choose between Wakanda’s welfare and her own.”

That synopsis is not comic book Shuri.

But that cover art is what's egregious IMO. It just speaks to the try-hard mentality Marvel has for the Wakandan women that they have to be overly-masculine in order to be seen as "powerful"... even tho the whole appeal of Disney Princess Shuri is that she's a muthafukkin Disney Princess... dressed like an Afro-millennial and more associated with "smart and adorable" than "fierce and angry".

And then throwing the other Avengers in the background for no other reason but sales desperation

Comic Shuri herself is in a tough spot, and always has been, because she's a tweener...

Not young enough to be considered peers with Kamala, Miles, Riri (who Bendis i feel ripped off MCU Shuri with), Nova, etc... but not old enough to be considered a peer of T'Challa or his Avenger peers. And she's not the brainiac of Wakanda/top 5 smartest in the world like she is in the MCU. T'Challa is smarter and the better fighter, and invents his own things, so I found her to be a bit useless/pointless up until the movie gave us a great interpretation of her.

...though even that was at the cost of lowkey dumbing T'Challa down. But still better than the comics. Think of it like this, the only time Shuri ever got to shine in the comics was if they found a way to kick her brother out of the picture. It was like they were allergic to making the siblings work as a tandem, up until the movie.

That said, MCU Shuri is going places. Comic version however... they may find a way to bridge the gap but it aint gon be with this current writer.

as for her placement, they could remake mighty avengers with bucky and her, have her lead the thunderbolts(old shuri would have been GREAT as a no nonsense leader of thunder bolts,) or she could be a leader of an different incarnation of new warriors.

Who knows, Coates was all over the place with her. He somewhat admirably wanted to give her her own lane/identity (which she was in need of, imo) but all he essentially did was make her KotD (king of the dead) 2.0.

i.e. He took Hickman's idea of T'Challa talking to his (male) ancestors, gaining their wisdom/experience, and controlling the dead/zombies... and basically remixed it to Shuri, right down to having her summon and control zombies!

Personality wise he altered her hot-headed fiery temperament and made her this emotionless stoic wise(wo)man who speaks in riddles. I got the impression he had more planned for her and the whole rebellion of the Doras/anarchy in Wakanda bit, until he was likely told by Marvel to cut that shyt out. He likely wanted her to take over, or rule some Themyscaria version of Wakanda with the Doras and female refugees
