Following an outcry by fans on social media, Marvel Comics has responded to controversial artwork released in the pages of X-Men Gold #1.

The artwork in question involves numbers that reference a verse from the Qur’an cited in support of intolerance towards other religions, as well as certain political protest taking place in Indonesia.

Marvel’s statement, provided to ComicBook.com, is as follows:

The mentioned artwork in X-Men Gold #1 was inserted without knowledge behind its reported meanings. These implied references do not reflect the views of the writer, editors or anyone else at Marvel and are in direct opposition of the inclusiveness of Marvel Comics and what the X-Men have stood for since their creation. This artwork will be removed from subsequent printings, digital versions, and trade paperbacks and disciplinary action is being taken.”

X-Men Gold #1 was illustrated by Indonesian artist Ardian Syaf. Syaf snuck several references into the art, including numbers referencing protests by Muslim Indonesians of the Christian governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, who himself was accused of making certain intolerant statements. The scene has the Jewish mutant Kitty Pryde appealing to a crowd of humans for tolerance. Syaf's art places Kitty's head adjacent to the "jew" portion of a "jewelry" sign in the background, and the numbers 212 and 51 in the background are related to the Jakarta protests.

There was also a scene of the X-Men playing baseball. In the scene, Colossus is wearing a t-shirt with the letters and numbers "QS 5:51," which reference a verse from the Qur’an that, in a specific Indonesian translation, translates into a warning that Muslims should not appoint Christians or Jewish people as their leaders.

It is worth noting that the X-Men were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, two Jewish creators. Marc Guggenheim, the writer of X-Men Gold #1, is himself Jewish. Even within the context of the issue, the X-Men are led by Kitty Pryde, who is Jewish and a former love interest of Colossus. Colossus's best friend, Nightcrawler, is also a Catholic priest and is part of the team.

X-Men Gold released on Wednesday and was generally well-received by fans. The controversy came to the forefront this morning when the references to the Qu'ran verses and Jakarta protests were noted on social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook, as well as on Reddit.

No further details were provided concerning how exactly Marvel will discipline Syaf. Preview art suggests that Syaf has already completed work on X-Men Gold #2, which releases on April 19. Syaf is also one of three announced rotating artists on X-Men Gold, along with RB Silva and Ken Lashley, so it may be some time before fans know for certain if he will returning to X-Men Gold.

X-Men Gold Artist Addresses Controversy: ‘My Career is Over Now’
18 hours agoby Albert Chingin Comic NewsComment

Artist Ardian Syaf has addressed the controversy surrounding hidden political and religious messages in “X-Men Gold” #1, and his statement is direct: “My career is over now.”

In a public post published Monday evening on his personal Facebook page, Syaf wrote, in English rather than his native Indonesian, that the apparent end of his career is the “consequence” of his actions and he has accepted it. “Please no more mockery, [debate], no more hate,” Syaf wrote. “I hope all in peace.” Later in the post, Syaf cited the Quran verse and protest reference that appeared in “X-Men Gold” #1, stating that it was a message of “justice” and “love.”

Marvel Responds to X-Men Gold Artist Controversy

It’s not yet known what exactly Syaf means by “My career is over.” Though Marvel promised disciplinary action for the statements hidden in “X-Men Gold” #1, it’s not clear if Syaf is taking a self-imposed exile, or simply accepting that inevitable mistrust from publishers and editors will severely limit his future career prospects. Notably, Syaf’s public Facebook fan page has apparently been deleted.

This past Saturday, observers on social media noticed that Syaf hid references to protests against Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Christian and the current governor of Jakarta, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia. Syaf, who is Indonesian, drew X-Men character Colossus wearing a T-shirt reading “QS 5:51,” meaning Quran Surah 5:51. The quran.com translation reads, “O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you – then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.” Additionally, the number “212” is seen in a crowd scene in the issue (seen above), a reference to a real-life protest on Dec. 2, 2016, where an estimated 200,000 Indonesians marched against Purnama for alleged blasphemy against the Quran during a speech.

Given the X-Men’s longtime status as a symbol for persecuted minorities, fans were upset to see the series used for a message seemingly sent against the religious minorities in Indonesia. Marvel responded quickly by issuing a statement saying that the messages would be removed from future editions and digital versions, and that “disciplinary action” would be taken against Syaf.

Syaf is solicited as the artist for “X-Men Gold” through May’s issue #4. Here’s Syaf’s statement in full:

“Hello, Worlds…

My career is over now. It’s the consequence what I did, and I take it.Please no more mockery, debat, no more hate. I hope all in peace.

In this last chance, I want to tell you the true meaning of the numbers, 212 and QS 5:51.

It is number of JUSTICE. It is number of LOVE. My love to Holy Qur’an…my love to the last prophet, the Messenger…my love to ALLAH, The One God.

My apologize for all the noise. Good bye, May God bless you all. I love all of you.

-Ardian Syaf-“

That ending sounds cryptic :whoo:
